This time the fun is thanks to Bri A. who sent us some screen shots from the website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trillian.im\/\" target=\"_blank\">Trillian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Against heteronormativity,\u00a0you can choose your sexual orientation.\u00a0 If you choose female and gay, you are represented by two side-by-side female symbols (on the right):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/23.jpg\" width=\"571\" height=\"237\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, if you choose straight, you aren&#8217;t represented by a male and female symbol, you&#8217;re just represented by a female symbol:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/14.jpg\" width=\"569\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This reveals that straight is the default (without\u00a0 a male by her side, everyone assumes she&#8217;s straight), and gay is the different, odd, marked category.<\/p>\n<p>Bri then added &#8220;in a relationship&#8221; and noticed that, despite choosing gay and female, the &#8220;in a relationship&#8221; icon featured a man and a woman:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/22\/straight-women-are-women-and-gay-women-are-gay-also-straight\/3-24\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19231\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19231\" title=\"3\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/33.jpg\" width=\"571\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oops.\u00a0 Heteronormatity is back!<\/p>\n<p>And, if she clicked &#8220;single,&#8221; the icon simply represented her as a man:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/22\/straight-women-are-women-and-gay-women-are-gay-also-straight\/5-11\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19232\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19232\" title=\"5\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/51.jpg\" width=\"576\" height=\"232\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Presumably all people are represented by a male figure.\u00a0 And we can&#8217;t even pretend that it&#8217;s neutral and supposed to represent &#8220;person,&#8221; because the &#8220;in a relationship icon&#8221; clearly includes a male\u00a0and a\u00a0female figure.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s funny is that these seem like really easy problems to fix, but either no has noticed or no one cares.<\/p>\n<p>For\u00a0 more posts on default and marked figures, see our posts on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/04\/does-this-sign-suprise-you\/\" target=\"_self\">traffic lights with female figures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/18\/stick-figures-and-stick-figures-who-parent\/\" target=\"_self\">stick figures and stick figures who parent<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/04\/default-avatars-a-collection\/\" target=\"_self\">default avatars<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
