{"id":18978,"date":"2010-01-17T10:53:26","date_gmt":"2010-01-17T15:53:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=18978"},"modified":"2013-12-15T04:28:00","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T09:28:00","slug":"tourism-and-the-objectification-of-the-native","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/17\/tourism-and-the-objectification-of-the-native\/","title":{"rendered":"Tourism and the Objectification of the Native"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We often talk about gender objectification on this blog, but we also try to talk about other types of objectification.\u00a0 In this case, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.literanista.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Literanista<\/a> sent us a great example of racial\/nationalist objectification.\u00a0 The example comes from a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.therealdr.com\/store\/all-north-coast-excursions-93\/north-coast-outback-jeep-safari-180.html\" target=\"_blank\">tourism website<\/a> for travelers to the Dominican Republic.\u00a0 It offers, in one of its excursions, the chance to swim in a jungle river, enjoy a secluded beach, visit a &#8220;Rum Shack,&#8221; taste fresh sugarcane, see native animals and meet an honest-to-goodness-real-Dominican family.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/17\/tourism-and-the-objectification-of-the-native\/capture-81\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18980\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18980\" title=\"Capture\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Capture8.jpg\" width=\"443\" height=\"292\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nElsewhere, just to add some negative stereotyping, the website suggests that Dominican&#8217;s are drunk all the time:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/17\/tourism-and-the-objectification-of-the-native\/capture2-33\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-18981\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-18981\" title=\"Capture2\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Capture23.jpg\" width=\"547\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Capture23.jpg 658w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/Capture23-500x71.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/a>In a similar vein, Karole F. sent in a photograph of some &#8220;African&#8221; carvings for sale a Stones &#8216;n Stuff in Exeter, New Hampshire.\u00a0 Human beings are included as objectified tokens alongside animals:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/17\/tourism-and-the-objectification-of-the-native\/img_3500\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19017\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19017\" title=\"IMG_3500\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2010\/01\/IMG_3500.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFor more tourism-related objectification, see our posts on tourism in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/20\/the-dancing-hawaiian-girl-at-your-service\/\" target=\"_self\">Hawaii<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/04\/friendly-villagers-get-news-from-foreign-lands-tourism-in-brazil\/\" target=\"_self\">Brazil<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/26\/ethnic-curiosities-the-trouble-with-tourism\/\" target=\"_self\">Thailand<\/a>, and, related, these <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/04\/images-of-international-adoption\/\" target=\"_self\">images of international adoption<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/08\/onesies-for-transnationally-adopted-infants\/\" target=\"_self\">onesies for internationally adopted babies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
