{"id":18764,"date":"2010-01-07T10:43:21","date_gmt":"2010-01-07T15:43:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=18764"},"modified":"2013-12-15T04:35:27","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T09:35:27","slug":"are-they-racist-or-are-we-ethnocentric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/07\/are-they-racist-or-are-we-ethnocentric\/","title":{"rendered":"Are They Racist or Are We Ethnocentric?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Keely W., Sophie J., and Austin C. sent in this 20-second commercial for KFC\u00a0in which a white guy surrounded by black people makes the &#8220;awkward&#8221; situation all better by giving them fried chicken:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"425\" height=\"344\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/FftZt-Dw_hQ&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>So, first of all, feeling awkward because you&#8217;re the only person with your particular racial make up in a group is called white privilege.\u00a0 Most racial minorities find themselves the only or one of the only members of their group all of the time.\u00a0 Calling the situation &#8220;awkward&#8221; just suggests that white people are, or should be, uncomfortable around black people.<\/p>\n<p>But, second, is it racist that the guy soothes the situation by sharing fried chicken?\u00a0 In the U.S., the idea that black people eat a lot of fried chicken is a stereotype (<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/16\/obama-bucks-caricatures-of-barack-obama\/\" target=\"_self\">applied recently to Obama<\/a>).\u00a0 But this is an Australian commercial and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/business\/2010\/jan\/06\/kfc-advertisement-accused-of-racism\" target=\"_blank\">KFC is saying<\/a> that there is no such association in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if that&#8217;s true.\u00a0 But if it is, it raises interesting questions as to (1) \u00a0just how cognizant companies should have to be about various stereotypes around the world and (2) whether the biased histories of some countries must be more attended to than others.<\/p>\n<p>A Guardian article quotes a professor arguing that the U.S. has &#8220;&#8230;a tendency to think that their history is more important than that of other countries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ouch.\u00a0 Does it hurt because it&#8217;s true?<\/p>\n<p>I think these are tough questions.\u00a0 What do you think?<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
