{"id":18580,"date":"2010-01-04T10:30:30","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T15:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=18580"},"modified":"2013-12-15T04:36:39","modified_gmt":"2013-12-15T09:36:39","slug":"the-violent-romantic-comedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/04\/the-violent-romantic-comedy\/","title":{"rendered":"The Violent Romantic Comedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was 15, for some bizarre reason, I saw <em>War of the Roses<\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5ebv3i_9Ltc\" data-rel=\"lightbox-video-0\" target=\"_blank\">trailer<\/a>).\u00a0 The movie stars Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, who play a married couple in the midst of a divorce and basically spend the entire movie trying very, very hard to hurt each other physically and emotionally.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a violent, violent comedy.<\/p>\n<p>I remember really liking it and telling my Dad who, with his usual gentle wisdom, said something to the effect of &#8220;it&#8217;s never funny when two people who are supposed to love each other try to hurt each other.&#8221;\u00a0 I was chagrined.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of this moment when I watched the trailer for <em>Bounty Hunter<\/em>, sent in by Ryan G.\u00a0 In the movie, Jennifer Aniston plays a woman who fails to show up in court and is then, essentially, violently kidnapped by her bounty hunter ex. The trailer:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"340\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/W7mprCkSdhc&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1&amp;\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Now, 20 years later, I&#8217;m with my Dad.<\/p>\n<p>(Trigger warning for all the links below.)<\/p>\n<p>What it is about U.S. society that makes sexually-charged <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/28\/more-trivialization-of-violence-against-women\/\" target=\"_self\">violent<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/10\/29\/since-were-on-the-topic-of-grotesque-t-shirts\/\" target=\"_self\">hate<\/a> so <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/11\/29\/just-in-time-for-the-holidays\/\" target=\"_self\">funny<\/a>? Are we, as the bemoaners claim, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/02\/brutalized-women-as-entertainment-a-csi-ad-trigger-warning\/\" target=\"_self\">anesthetized<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/09\/on-deadgirl-the-movie-nsfw-trigger-warning\/\" target=\"_self\">to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/26\/violence-against-women-still-fashionable\/\" target=\"_self\">violence<\/a>? Is it an internalized sense that men and women\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/19\/teaching-kids-that-there-is-a-battle-of-the-sexes\/\" target=\"_self\">are<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/13\/before-feminism-when-men-were-men\/\" target=\"_self\">at<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/04\/trivial-pursuit-and-the-war-between-the-sexes\/\" target=\"_self\">war<\/a>? Is it the idea that (heterosexual) relationships are, ultimately, a <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/27\/sex-and-dating-as-a-hunt\/\" target=\"_self\">zero sume game<\/a>? Is it a conflation of sex and power, and a constant <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/14\/sexualized-violence\/\" target=\"_self\">affirmation<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/26\/passion-or-attack-update\/\" target=\"_self\">good<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/07\/is-it-romance-or-stalking\/\" target=\"_self\">sex<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/30\/naturalizing-male-harassment-of-women-in-dance\/\" target=\"_self\">relationships<\/a>) include <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/29\/sexualized-images-of-female-dominance\/\" target=\"_self\">violence<\/a>, that makes a movie such as this so <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/08\/29\/the-full-set\/\" target=\"_self\">titillating<\/a>? Is it a true hate for the other, supposedly <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/27\/the-fear-and-suffering-of-women-as-a-sexual-turn-on\/\" target=\"_self\">opposite<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/30\/the-hate-f\/\" target=\"_self\">sex<\/a>?
