Jan &#8217;10<\/span>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Food<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dudes.\u00a0 I added an ad with a recipe for <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/20\/jell-o-for-salads\/\" target=\"_self\">jello with tuna<\/a> to our post on vintage recipes for savory gelatin.\u00a0 I am not kidding.<\/p>\n<p>We added a new commercial to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/11\/21\/french-orangina-ad-sexy-animals-and-erupting-orangina-bottles\/\">previous post on Orangina; this one includes interspecies S&amp;M<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Edward S. alerted us to a commercial where a pig does the Flashdance.\u00a0 We added it to our post on <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/25\/sexualizing-and-gendering-food\/\" target=\"_self\">gendered and sexualized food<\/a> (scroll all the way down).<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve previously posted on the historical <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/05\/20\/for-men-only-vintage-campbells-soup-ad\/\">association of men (and masculinity) with meat<\/a>. Jon S. sent us an example, a Weight Watchers ad that promises men they don&#8217;t have to eat &#8220;like a rabbit,&#8221; accompanied by an image of a hunk of beef. &#8216;Cause men need steak and potatoes, even when they&#8217;re dieting!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Media and Marketing<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gwen and I were like: &#8220;We&#8217;re so NOT adding any more content to the evolution of Evony ads post unless someone sends in something that truly takes it a step further&#8230; and that&#8217;s impossible.&#8221; Right? Wrong. Chris M., Tinpantithesis, Chris M., and Ryan sent in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/14\/evolution-of-evony-video-game-ads\/\" target=\"_self\">the next step in the Evony ads<\/a>. Believe it.<\/p>\n<p>CNN asked us if Jon and Kate Gosselin were getting too much coverage while advertising CNN&#8217;s coverage of them. We added <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/28\/cnn-is-it-getting-too-much-coverage-we-better-cover-it-to-see\/\" target=\"_self\">another example of media hypocrisy&#8211;Dr. Drew of &#8220;Celebrity Rehab&#8221; telling us we shouldn&#8217;t be so interested in celebrities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What can we appropriate the feminist movement to sell in addition to bras? <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/27\/commodifying-the-womens-movement\/\">How about shoes?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We posted about <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/21\/normal-womans-body-published-in-glamour-and-people-like-it\/\">the September 2009 issue of <em>Glamour<\/em><\/a> including a picture of a naked &#8220;plus-size&#8221; model (that is, a size 12). We updated the post with a similar photo of a group of women with less-than-model-thin bodies that is in the <em>Glamour<\/em> calendar.<\/p>\n<p>Marc C. sent us a link to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/06\/what-warrants-a-slide-show\/\" target=\"_self\">a slide show featuring 185 pictures of cheerleaders<\/a>.\u00a0 We added it to our post titled &#8220;What Warrants a Slide Show?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We added a photo from the liner notes of a Lady Gaga CD in which she and Kanye West are in a pose reminiscent of King Kong to an older post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/14\/athletes-and-models\/\" target=\"_self\">the King Kong motif<\/a>.\u00a0 Thanks to Ruth D&#8217;R. and an anonymous tipster!<\/p>\n<p>Sara L. sent us another example to add to our <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/07\/the-color-of-housecleaning\/\">post about housecleaning services<\/a> that present house cleaners as non-white and those having their houses cleaned as white.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another month, another addition to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/10\/ejaculation-imagery-in-ads\/\" target=\"_self\">ejaculation imagery<\/a> post.\u00a0 Can you say &#8220;splooge halo&#8221;?\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 Thanks to Helene V. for the submission.<\/p>\n<p>Someone-who-prefers-to-remain-anonymous sent us another example of a t-shirt that equates sexual penetration with domination in the sports arena, which we added to <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/23\/sex-and-power\/\">our original post on the topic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Julia U. sent in some Calvin Klein ads that centrally feature the naked body of a black man.\u00a0 We added them to our post on <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/30\/objectifying-men\/\" target=\"_self\">the sexual objectification of men<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We updated one of our <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/04\/future-trophy-wife-girls-t-shirt\/\">posts about the sexualization of little girls<\/a> with photos of baby bibs that say &#8220;flirt&#8221; and &#8220;single.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gender<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We found a vintage ad for Plymouth Barracuda marketed specifically to women and we added it to our post on <a href=\".www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/11\/05\/dodge-la-femme\/\" target=\"_self\">the awesome Dodge La Femme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Liscadifretta sent in <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/04\/products-shaped-like-female-bodies\/\" target=\"_self\">a photo of a clothes hanger meant to look like a woman&#8217;s legs and crotch<\/a>.\u00a0 We added it to our post featuring furniture shaped like (naked) women.<\/p>\n<p>Joel P. sent us a link to the updated Diamonds or the Doghouse campaign by JC Penney.\u00a0 Like last year, the message is that <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/10\/buy-her-diamonds-or-else\/\" target=\"_self\">you can be a total dick to your wife, so long as you are willing to buy her diamonds, because diamonds make her incredibly stupid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As always, we had more to add to our post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/21\/pink-earplugs-for-your-beauty-sleep\/\" target=\"_self\">pointlessly gendered products<\/a>, this time boys&#8217; and girls&#8217; organic body wash and Nivea chapstick.<\/p>\n<p>And we updated our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/12\/make-up-and-beauty-regimes-for-men\/\">marketing beauty products to men<\/a> to include On the Job, a line of lotions&#8211;or, if you prefer, <em>polymer gloves<\/em>&#8211;for men.<\/p>\n<p>Anna K.-B. sent us another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/24\/charity-for-womenandchildren\/\" target=\"_self\">health-related activism aimed specifically, and unnecessarily, at women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica H. sent us another example of a business marketing its services with gender: <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/23\/wouldnt-a-wife-be-great\/\" target=\"_self\">The Occasional Wife, and The Handy Husband and, Jessica&#8217;s find, Boyfriend for Hire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Remember when we posted about <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/04\/gendering-online-degree-programs\/\">the gendering (and Whitening) of online degree programs<\/a>? Ryan\u00a0 sent us another example so we added it.<\/p>\n<p>And we added another added to post on <a href=\"www.thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/08\/socializing-boys-and-girls\/\">socializing kids with gendered toys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Stuff!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ashleigh V. sent along another Twingo commercial. This one <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2010\/01\/24\/equating-modernity-with-equality\/\" target=\"_self\">equates modernity with sexual permissiveness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We added another batch of dolls with disabilities to our post on reactions to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/10\/dolls-with-downs-syndrome\/\">dolls with Down&#8217;s Syndrome<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We added another DDT product to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/01\/ddt-is-good-for-me-e-e\/\" target=\"_self\">vintage post with ads advocating the household use of DDT, a pesticide that later turned out to be wholly toxic<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWS: Lisa will be in New Orleans in February!\u00a0 If anyone is interested in coming to a SocImages cocktail hour, email her at socimages@thesocietypages.org.
