This was a good media month for us.\u00a0 I was quoted in a CNN article about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/SHOWBIZ\/Movies\/12\/11\/princess.frog.parents\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Princess and the Frog<\/a>; several of our posts on gendered marketing to children were discussed in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/life\/children\/index.html?story=\/mwt\/broadsheet\/feature\/2009\/12\/21\/toys_and_gender\" target=\"_blank\">a Salon article by Kate Harding<\/a>;\u00a0a recent post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/29\/girls-need-less-power\/\" target=\"_self\">pink telescopes and microscopes<\/a> was featured on <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/pharyngula\/2009\/12\/the_powerlessness_of_pink.php\" target=\"_blank\">Pharygula<\/a>; we were linked from the <a href=\"http:\/\/spectator.org\/blog\/2009\/12\/29\/daily-must-reads\" target=\"_blank\">American Spectator<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guardian<\/a> named our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/28\/on-avatar-the-movie-spoiler-alert\/\" target=\"_self\">Avatar post<\/a> among The Best of the Web.\u00a0 Fun!<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE FROM A READER:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sarah is a reader and frequent commenter on the blog who sent us a note complimenting all of you.\u00a0 We thought we&#8217;d let everyone read it.\u00a0 Sarah wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I just wanted to commend you for the environment of open discourse on your website. Dec &#8217;09<\/span>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marketing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We found another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/08\/sugar-information-inc\/\" target=\"_self\">vintage ads extolling the dietary benefits of sugar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Larry H. sent us two photos of Amelia Earhart from 1937 in which she is posed in cutesy, flirty ways; we added it to our post of a <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/06\/amelia-earhardt-for-lucky-strike-1928\/\">Lucky Strike ad<\/a> featuring Earhart.<\/p>\n<p>Dmitriy T.M. sent in another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/26\/chryslers-are-for-kids\/\" target=\"_self\">a vintage Chrysler ad in which they market the car as youthful<\/a> (can you imagine!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race and Ethnicity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/17\/racist-and-ethnocentric-jello-ad-from-the-1960s\/\" target=\"_self\">To our vintage Jello ad featuring Asian stereotypes, we added a contemporaneous ad for Rice Krinkles<\/a>, sent in by Ted K.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;d be nice to not link back to our post on instances in which college and post-college students dress up like racial minorities, but this isn&#8217;t one of those updates.\u00a0 We added an image of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/11\/08\/individual-racism-alive-and-well\/\" target=\"_self\">students at the London School of Economics\u00a0 in brown-face dressed up like Guantanamo Bay prisoners<\/a> to our post featuring similar acts of individual racist impersonations (scroll way down).<\/p>\n<p>Pete W. sent in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/11\/21\/racism-in-bull-durham-tobacco-ads\/\" target=\"_self\">a third vintage Bull Durham tobacco ad depicting Black Americans as foolish and bumbling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pornification<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yikes!\u00a0 We added a new ad to our post where <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/27\/non-subtle-sex-in-advertising\/\" target=\"_self\">sexual body parts are not-so-subliminally included in ads<\/a> (NSFW).\u00a0 This one is for &#8220;fresh&#8221; &#8220;shaved&#8221; turkey breast slices and they look like, um&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Our evolution of Evony ads post has been among the most popular posts on our site.\u00a0 Timm F. sent in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/14\/evolution-of-evony-video-game-ads\/\" target=\"_self\">an ad for another online game, Alteil, making fun of the Evony ads<\/a>.\u00a0 We added it to the original post and, while we were at it, we also added another in the series of increasingly sexualized ads, this one sent in by Tim R.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gender<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harvey tC. sent in a photo that we added to our post featuring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/09\/29\/marketing-guns-to-women\/\" target=\"_self\">pink guns and rifles being marketed to girls\/women<\/a>.\u00a0 For the hell of it: here is <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/06\/equal-opportunity-gun-ownership\/\" target=\"_self\">a crazy great set of pro-gun posters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both Emily W. and Sabine M. sent us another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/12\/14\/women-can-wear-mens-shirts-but-men-cannot-wear-womens\/\" target=\"_self\">t-shirts being divvied up into &#8220;t-shirts&#8221; and &#8220;women&#8217;s t-shirts.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth T. sent in a video of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/08\/satirizing-sitcoms\/\" target=\"_self\">men vamping it up and trying to &#8220;do&#8221; sexy<\/a>. We added it to another post asking whether, given the gender binary and our gendered image of &#8220;sexy,&#8221; such a thing can be anything other than ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>Monica C. sent in another great example of gendered toy advertising.\u00a0 In this one <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/24\/10117\/\" target=\"_self\">a girl plays with a kitchen set alongside a boy playing with a tool set<\/a>.\u00a0 Sigh.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, Lynne S. and <a href=\"thelaundrynarrative.blogspot.com\" target=\"_blank\">Fia K.<\/a> sent in some more photos of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/13\/my-cleaning-trolley-for-girls-only\/\" target=\"_self\">house play toys featuring both girls and boys<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
