BVD is a brand of men&#8217;s underwear. The site has several tabs that let you &#8220;study&#8221; men in various ways. In the Chemistry section we see what men are made up of (larger version <a href=\"http:\/\/thebvdmanual.com\/#\/chemistry\/elements\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15871 aligncenter\" title=\"elements\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/elements-500x249.jpg\" alt=\"elements\" width=\"518\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So guys are made up of, among other things, obnoxium, machisium, bragnausium, and larcenic.<\/p>\n<p>If you go to the Sociology section you can take two quizzes. The first is about getting dressed (take the quiz\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thebvdmanual.com\/#\/sociology\/dressed\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). If at the first step you answer that you are male you are taken to a second step that asks &#8220;model or guy?&#8221; If you answer model, you are directed to the female category. Once on the female track, you get to go through a series of questions playing on stereotypes of women and, apparently, men who don&#8217;t qualify as &#8220;guys&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15872 aligncenter\" title=\"BVD quiz1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/BVD-quiz1-475x500.jpg\" alt=\"BVD quiz1\" width=\"533\" height=\"555\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The second\u00a0one is on being comfortable (quiz is <a href=\"http:\/\/thebvdmanual.com\/#\/sociology\/comfortable\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). In the second step you have to choose between &#8220;sensitive type&#8221;\u00a0 or &#8220;guy,&#8221; and if you choose &#8220;sensitive type,&#8221; you go to the female section:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15873 aligncenter\" title=\"BVD quiz2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/BVD-quiz2-486x500.jpg\" alt=\"BVD quiz2\" width=\"480\" height=\"565\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In both cases, at the end of the female path, the last question is &#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t you rather just be a guy?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great example of the association of &#8220;real&#8221; manliness with obnoxious characteristics, while men who don&#8217;t meet the requirements for being real men are feminized. While real guys are stereotyped (they&#8217;re self-centered, obnoxious, and braggy),\u00a0those characteristics are\u00a0still preferable to being a &#8220;sensitive&#8221; guy with &#8220;feelings&#8221; and &#8220;needs.&#8221; And of course, it also denigrates women when being associated with femininity is a way of ridiculing men.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chelsea S. sent in a link to the BVD website and its\u00a0BVD MANual\u00a0campaign.
