Cajuns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In several posts, we have problematized past and present school mascots.\u00a0 In this post, I discuss <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragincajuns.com\/PhotoAlbum.dbml?&amp;DB_OEM_ID=15400&amp;PALBID=10448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin&#8217; Cajuns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15451\" title=\"ULL\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/ULL.gif\" alt=\"ULL\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/ULL.gif 200w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/ULL-150x150.gif 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Originally, UL Lafayette&#8217;s mascot was a Bulldog.\u00a0 Then, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragincajuns.com\/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=15400&amp;ATCLID=811251\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the mascot history page<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;in the early 1960&#8217;s as an effort to &#8220;fire up&#8221; the football team,\u00a0Coach\u00a0Russ Faulkinberry called his team the Raging Cajuns since 95 percent of the football team was from the Acadiana area [i.e., ethnically Cajun].\u00a0 It was then decided by the Sports Information Director, Bob Henderson,\u00a0to honor the team and the Cajun heritage by calling them the Raging Cajuns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The first Ragin&#8217; Cajun mascot was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragincajuns.com\/PhotoAlbum.dbml?&amp;DB_OEM_ID=15400&amp;PALBID=10448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cajun Man<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15452\" title=\"cajun man\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/cajun-man.gif\" alt=\"cajun man\" width=\"160\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was protested by African American activists who resented the association of the multi-racial and -ethnic University with a white ethnicity.\u00a0 From another perspective, the mascot was questioned on the grounds that &#8220;Cajun&#8221; had once been a nasty racial slur.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently the University lost Cajun Man when he graduated, so he was replaced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragincajuns.com\/PhotoAlbum.dbml?PAGE_ID=&amp;ZID=547631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cajun Chicken<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15466\" title=\"GLAIBSRHCEWTCVC.20070413161145\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/GLAIBSRHCEWTCVC.20070413161145.jpg\" alt=\"GLAIBSRHCEWTCVC.20070413161145\" width=\"391\" height=\"471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/GLAIBSRHCEWTCVC.20070413161145.jpg 530w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/GLAIBSRHCEWTCVC.20070413161145-414x500.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cajun Chicken as Elvis (what, your mascot didn&#8217;t dress up like Elvis?):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15462\" title=\"JBAPCUWPAERAUQQ.20070413161210\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/JBAPCUWPAERAUQQ.20070413161210.jpg\" alt=\"JBAPCUWPAERAUQQ.20070413161210\" width=\"387\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/JBAPCUWPAERAUQQ.20070413161210.jpg 452w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/JBAPCUWPAERAUQQ.20070413161210-353x500.jpg 353w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 387px) 100vw, 387px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Cajun Chicken was later replaced by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ragincajuns.com\/PhotoAlbum.dbml?PAGE_ID=&amp;ZID=542478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cayenne<\/a>, a chili pepper, the University&#8217;s current mascot:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15471\" title=\"JQOUKXVBITKMPNI.20070408033922\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/JQOUKXVBITKMPNI.20070408033922.gif\" alt=\"JQOUKXVBITKMPNI.20070408033922\" width=\"301\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/JQOUKXVBITKMPNI.20070408033922.gif 480w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/11\/JQOUKXVBITKMPNI.20070408033922-375x500.gif 375w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Still, the disappearance of the Cajun Man has not led to the disappearance of the controversy over the mascot, kept alive with the term &#8220;Ragin&#8217; Cajuns.&#8221;\u00a0 In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenwood.com\/catalog\/C7817.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Blue Collar Bayou<\/em><\/a>, Jaques Henry and Carl Bankston III report that in 1997 Louis Farrakhan protested that the state funding of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette amounted to the state using &#8220;African American and Creole tax dollars&#8230; to promote a white culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Consider the Ragin&#8217; Cajun controversy in light of the other mascots we&#8217;ve covered: <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/15\/go-orientials-go\/\" target=\"_self\">the Orientals, the Gauchos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/09\/dutch-soccer-club-nicknamed-the-jews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Jews<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/05\/notre-dames-fighting-irish-mascot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fighting Irish<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/22\/some-native-american-sports-mascots\/\" target=\"_self\">Indians<\/a>.<\/p>\n<span class=\"ft_signature\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\">Lisa Wade, PhD<\/a> is an Associate Professor at Tulane University.
