F. sent us these four breast cancer awareness ads to compare and contrast (find them <a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/myraferree\/PinkBlue?authkey=lrQ2iMjmV4Q\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 They are all super pink-ified (because men don&#8217;t get breast cancer&#8230; oh wait, they do), but the first two use stereotypical femininity and the latter two challenge them.<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0 Ah the lovely <del datetime=\"00\">young<\/del> middle-aged woman (I stand corrected), the ruffley white blouse, the slight head tilt, and the fashionable breast cancer scarf.\u00a0 You too can look oh so good while\u00a0you fight breast cancer!\u00a0 Go Ford!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1466\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">(2)\u00a0 &#8220;Expose the Truth.&#8221;\u00a0 Those awesome knockers on that gorgeous anonymous babe could someday be victims of breast cancer.\u00a0 And we can&#8217;t have that!\u00a0 Support breast cancer research!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1462\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Consider how different these next two are:<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><\/a><br \/>\nHere we see a woman who accepts some conventional definitions of femininity (make-up, pearls, earrings and, of course, pink), but rejects the idea that women should be ashamed to lose markers of femininity (&#8220;We can live without our hair.\u00a0 We can live without our breasts.&#8221;) and instead looks bravely towards a cure (&#8220;We cannot live without our hope for a cure.&#8221;)\u00a0 Plus, this image is about action (a race) instead of fashion (a scarf), suggesting that it is also a rejection of the idea that to be feminine is to be passive or powerless.<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-11.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1461\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">And this image actually mocks the symbolic ribbon and, I will add, bracelet\u00a0activism (how feminine are ribbons and bracelets?), in favor of appropriating a masculine symbol (heavy machinery) by turning it pink and putting it to work against breast cancer.\u00a0 The text at the bottom says: &#8220;Stop breast cancer!\u00a0 It&#8217;s in our power!&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1465\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/gender-breast-cancer-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Four ads, all with the same message, all mobilizing femininity, but in two very different ways.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Thanks again to Myra!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Myra M.
