Wow. Weird. But at least they have fewer troubles than the middle class. There are so many irritations you have to face when you aren&#8217;t poor, but at least you &#8220;weather&#8221; them well.<\/p>\n<p>I may use this as an example of pointless graphs:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14602 aligncenter\" title=\"book 3\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-3-500x371.jpg\" alt=\"book 3\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-3-500x371.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-3.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here we have a list of some factors that are favorable, unfavorable, or unimportant for marital success; I&#8217;ve circled some of the more noteworthy items in red:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14603 aligncenter\" title=\"book 5\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-5-500x324.jpg\" alt=\"book 5\" width=\"500\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-5-500x324.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-5.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Text I highlighted:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[favorable]<\/p>\n<p>Happiness of parents&#8217; marriage &#8212;<em>both<\/em> (Not true for Negro couples)<\/p>\n<p>[unfavorable]<\/p>\n<p>Combinations where man feels inferior and woman does not<\/p>\n<p>Prone to argue points&#8211;<em>wife<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Determination to get own way&#8211;<em>wife<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Wife&#8217;s cultural background higher than husband&#8217;s<\/p>\n<p>Residence in the city during childhood<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So\u00a0you&#8217;re sure to have marital problems if the wife won&#8217;t give in on things and instead keeps being all argumentative and wanting her own way. I&#8217;m not sure what defines a cultural background as &#8220;higher&#8221; than others, but we see here the same pattern as we do with social class (which I presume is related to cultural background): it&#8217;s ok for men to &#8220;marry down,&#8221; but women aren&#8217;t supposed to.<\/p>\n<p>The textbook provides a pretty grim depiction of sex for a newly-married couple:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14604 aligncenter\" title=\"sex\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/sex-500x307.jpg\" alt=\"sex\" width=\"500\" height=\"307\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/sex-500x307.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/sex.JPG 527w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I found this little gem in on a page from the section on how ideals of marital life often don&#8217;t fit with reality:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14605 aligncenter\" title=\"ads\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/ads-500x82.jpg\" alt=\"ads\" width=\"500\" height=\"82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/ads-500x82.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/ads.JPG 639w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">It&#8217;s so widespread to think of marketing and advertising as manipulative today (even among those who like at least some ads or don&#8217;t see a real problem with them) that it&#8217;s striking to see such a sincerely\u00a0 positive portrayal of it as a helpful, even &#8220;kind&#8221; industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is noteworthy that the textbook, used during the height of the &#8220;Leave it to Beaver&#8221; &#8220;traditional&#8221; family era,\u00a0depicts the male-breadwinner\/female-homemaker family form as a recent creation, as wives became &#8220;expensive luxuries&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14606 aligncenter\" title=\"money\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/money-500x284.jpg\" alt=\"money\" width=\"500\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/money-500x284.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/money.JPG 639w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This section describing which women should work doesn&#8217;t seem to speak highly of women overall, since just a &#8220;few&#8221; of us have &#8220;special talents and skills.&#8221; However, it does make the point (in #5) that &#8220;a woman is not unemployed because she is not paid for her work,&#8221; an effort to bring attention to the value of women&#8217;s unpaid labor (in this instance,\u00a0community\/volunteer work):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14607 aligncenter\" title=\"skills\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/skills-500x359.jpg\" alt=\"skills\" width=\"500\" height=\"359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/skills-500x359.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/skills.JPG 639w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then there is a helpful discussion of eugenics and good breeding :<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14608 aligncenter\" title=\"book 10\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-10-300x500.jpg\" alt=\"book 10\" width=\"300\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-10-300x500.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-10-615x1024.jpg 615w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-10.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-14609 aligncenter\" title=\"book 11\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-11-500x354.jpg\" alt=\"book 11\" width=\"500\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-11-500x354.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/book-11.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot to ponder there.
