{"id":1449,"date":"2008-06-16T21:37:47","date_gmt":"2008-06-17T02:37:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2010-11-23T23:43:22","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T04:43:22","slug":"why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-3rd-in-a-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/16\/why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-3rd-in-a-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Why and How People of Color are Included in Advertising: 3rd in a Series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this series, I offer a typology reflecting the ways in which people of color are used in advertising aimed primarily at whites (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/18\/why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-first-in-a-series\/\" target=\"_self\">first<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/24\/why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-2nd-in-a-series\/\" target=\"_self\">second<\/a> in the series).\u00a0 In this, the third edition, I suggest that sometimes people of color are included because the idea of &#8220;diversity&#8221;\u00a0triggers the related ideas of &#8220;cool,&#8221; &#8220;hip,&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;urban,&#8221;\u00a0and &#8220;youth,&#8221; which also invoke &#8220;modernity&#8221; and the idea of being &#8220;global,&#8221; &#8220;cosmopolitan,&#8221; even &#8220;progressive&#8221; politics.<\/p>\n<p>In this ad, a mix of races are used.\u00a0 Notice that the ad also happens to include, in the bottom image,\u00a0photography,\u00a0what looks like a dark beer,\u00a0and espresso (all &#8220;upper class&#8221; &#8220;sophisticated&#8221; interests)\u00a0and, in the top image, we see that the woman who appears Asian is an art dealer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1452 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/race-media-coolhipyoungmodern-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"672\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this next ad, again, we see a mix of races enjoying what looks like a train ride (how European!) with hard liquor.\u00a0 The text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The shortest distance between two places isn&#8217;t nearly as interesting.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think it is no accident that &#8220;interesting&#8221; and racial difference are both present in this ad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1454\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/race-media-coolhipyoungmodern-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">In this next ad we see a racially ambiguous male and a black woman.\u00a0 Notice the clothes that they are wearing (casually sophisticated) and the delicate nature of their coffee cups.\u00a0 This is leisure, not some working-class Joe with a cup o&#8217; joe.\u00a0 Text:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">3658 miles from the coffee fields of the Columbian Andes.\u00a0 But still the perfect climate for Colombian Coffee.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The idea of travel, of course, invokes a certain degree of cosmopolitan-ness and wealth.\u00a0 And the &#8220;perfect&#8221; climate refers not just to weather, but to the kind of company Colombian Coffee drinkers keep.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1450 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/race-media-coolhipyoungmodern-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"658\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">This ad for H&amp;M\u00a0is a bit different.\u00a0 Instead of invoking sophistication and cosmopolitan-ness, I think it invokes who and what is &#8220;hip&#8221; and &#8220;cool&#8221; and &#8220;diversity&#8221; is used as a signifier.\u00a0The text:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">H&amp;M is Europe&#8217;s leading fashion retailer [Europe again], with over 850 stores worldwide [a reference to being &#8220;global&#8221;].\u00a0 Offering high-fashion [i.e., &#8220;sophisticated?&#8221;] and quality for men, women and children at great prices.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1453\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/06\/race-media-coolhipyoungmodern-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"638\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">These last two ads, instead of using people of color to emphasize being &#8220;hip&#8221; or &#8220;sophisticated,&#8221; use them to signal &#8220;youth&#8221; and what being young represents.\u00a0 Young people are on the forefront of &#8220;cool,&#8221; of course, and also, in some sense, define &#8220;progressive&#8221;
