{"id":13656,"date":"2009-10-02T10:08:19","date_gmt":"2009-10-02T15:08:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=13656"},"modified":"2012-10-14T02:03:37","modified_gmt":"2012-10-14T07:03:37","slug":"re-visioning-american-military-history","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/02\/re-visioning-american-military-history\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-Visioning American Military History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"www.gratefuldating.net\" target=\"_blank\">Jamy B.<\/a> snapped <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jamyblue\/3928437675\/\" target=\"_blank\">this photo<\/a> of an ad for a U.S. Army &#8220;live action&#8221; show in the D.C. metro:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13658\" title=\"3928437675_ec49ef44a6\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/10\/3928437675_ec49ef44a6.jpg\" alt=\"3928437675_ec49ef44a6\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The show is called &#8220;Spirit of America&#8221; and the slogan along the top reads: &#8220;Celebrate the spirit, strength and history of our nation!&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 The inclusion of a white woman and a black man alongside what appears to be a white man, suggests that the ad-makers want us to understand that the &#8220;spirit of America&#8221; involves racial and gender inclusiveness.\u00a0 Of course, this is in contrast to historical fact.\u00a0\u00a0 Being &#8220;patriotic,&#8221; I guess, means erasing historical injustices.<\/p>\n<p>Frankly, I have some sympathy for the promoters of this event.\u00a0 Inclusiveness is a nice idea.\u00a0 Unfortunately, they&#8217;re stuck between a rock and a hard place in trying to bring together ideology and reality.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NEW!<\/strong><\/span> Simon H. sent in a British poster (found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fmft.net\/archives\/004025.html#more\" target=\"_blank\">Free Market Fairy<\/a>) urging men to sign up to serve in World War I.
