Oct &#8217;09<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">)<\/span><\/span><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Downright Offensive<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a long time since we linked to our post featuring pictures from racial- and ethnic-themed college parties, but we found another example (this time Auburn University in 2001).\u00a0 In this one, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/11\/08\/individual-racism-alive-and-well\/\" target=\"_self\">college students dress up in Blackface and like Klan members<\/a>.\u00a0 Delightful.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We added another example of a urinal shaped like a woman&#8217;s mouth, sent in my Liz B.,\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/04\/21\/more-urinals\/\" target=\"_self\">our collection of\u00a0urinals and sinks meant to look like women&#8217;s body parts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>L. sent us a Facebook teaser for the movie DeadGirl (a movie about the rape and torture of a zombie woman) that describes the movie as &#8220;hot.&#8221;\u00a0 We added it to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/09\/on-deadgirl-the-movie-nsfw-trigger-warning\/\" target=\"_self\">our DeadGirl post (NSFW, Triggering)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like fashion shoots that present female models as dead bodies? We added more to our post of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/28\/dead-ish-looking-women-with-cats\/\" target=\"_self\">Lanvin ads that show women looking dead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We added another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/24\/power-sex-and-shoelaces\/\" target=\"_self\">ads featuring bound Asian women<\/a>, sent in by Penny R.<\/p>\n<p>Katie let us know about El Emigrante, a video game where the player is a bike-riding immigrant trying to avoid the police. We added it to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/18\/border-patrol-video-game\/\">post about Border Patrol<\/a>, a game where you try to shoot immigrants crossing into the U.S., including a pregnant woman.<\/p>\n<p><strong>War and Nation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A World War I British recruitment poster that portrayed the British Empire as a team working together reminded us of our post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/10\/02\/re-visioning-american-military-history\/\" target=\"_self\">re-imagining the U.S. military<\/a>, so we added it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Class<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Steve, my private plane friend, send me some more <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/04\/a-personal-peek-into-private-plane-travel\/\" target=\"_self\">pictures of the luxury of private aviation<\/a>.\u00a0 A free, personal cinema, in this case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gender<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amanda C. sent us another example of an instance in which <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/10\/what-does-lust-look-like\/\" target=\"_self\">&#8220;sex&#8221; is conflated with women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We updated our post comparing <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/22\/1950s-beauty-pageant-judging-guidelines\/\">beauty pageant standards<\/a> to standards for judging livestock with a photo taken by Steve P. outside a skincare store, in which a woman&#8217;s face is sliced up into parts to apparently help you pick the correct product for each section.<\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/25\/sexualizing-and-gendering-food\/\">post on gendering and sexualizing foods<\/a> has new additions: sexy fish sticks! And a Vegas restaurant appropriating feminist imagery from the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>We also updated our post about the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/14\/jennifer-love-hewitt-bikini-photo-controversy\/\" target=\"_self\">controversy surrounding Jennifer Love Hewitt&#8217;s weight<\/a> last summer with images of her in <em>Self<\/em> magazine showing her new, much slimmer body.<\/p>\n<p>We also updated a post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/06\/find-your-ukrainian-beauty-today\/\" target=\"_self\">a website that helps men find their &#8220;Ukrainian Beauty&#8221;<\/a> with an image from a protest in Ukraine about sex tourism&#8230;that features scantily-clad young women.<\/p>\n<p>Tawny T. sent us a video from Sweden about how heteronormativity affects gays, lesbians, and straight people. We added to our post on an <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/04\/29\/argentinian-bank-portrays-transgendered-people-positively\/\">Argentinian bank&#8217;s commercial that portrays transgender individuals positively<\/a> and a Progressive insurance ad that may be portraying a gay couple, since the reason those two ads are so surprising is that we rarely see ones like them.<\/p>\n<p>Rachael H. told us about Maxim&#8217;s guides to how men and women argue (Women are crazy! Men put up with their crap so they can have sex!) and we added it to our post of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/10\/men-vs-women-cartoon-a-short-overview-of-stereotypes\/\">a video showing a range of &#8220;men are like this, women are like that!&#8221; stereotypes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Will there ever be a month where we don&#8217;t add more examples to our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/21\/pink-earplugs-for-your-beauty-sleep\/\">pointlessly gendered products<\/a>?\u00a0 Maybe not. This month we added gendered tips for choosing a mattress, gendered versions of Windows XP customization software, gendered epsom salts,gendered snuggies, and gendered Target gift cards.\u00a0 Submitted by Shannon C., Em, Ondi, and Dmitiry T.M.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race\/Ethnicity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We added images from a photo shoot in a Romanian magazine to our post showing <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/04\/privilege-and-poverty-in-vogue-india\/\">people in poor parts of the world posed as props<\/a> next to expensive fashions or White models.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of using the &#8220;Other&#8221; as a prop.\u00a0 Shakira has been using a set of undifferentiated Asian drummers in her recent performances.\u00a0 We added it to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/15\/undifferentiated-groups-of-asians-as-ad-props\/\" target=\"_self\">a previous post on this theme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To my first post in a series about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/18\/why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-first-in-a-series\/\" target=\"_self\">how\u00a0people of color are used in advertising aimed (mainly) at white people<\/a>, I added an example of a black woman being used to represent &#8220;rhythm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jackie and Jasmine alerted us to another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/02\/doctoring-diversity-race-and-photoshop\/\" target=\"_self\">doctored diversity<\/a>, this one from the University of Texas, Arlington.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Race and Religion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We added an image from Mother Jones depicting Newt Gingrich as a &#8220;guru&#8221; figure to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/19\/guest-post-parsing-the-politics-of-caricature\/\">guest post on the National Review &#8220;wise Latina&#8221; cover<\/a> of Sotomayor and other uses of Asian\/Buddhist caricatures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEWS: Lisa was invited to co-host a Racialicious Podcast this week with Tami Winfrey Harris and Minh-ha Pham.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re interested, you can listen here.
