Madison (UW), Diallo Shabazz was my student.\u00a0 He was a senior.\u00a0 At the very beginning of his Frosh year, someone snapped this picture:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Picture5\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/09\/Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"Picture5\" width=\"276\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">From that point forward, Diallo was featured in UW promotional materials again and again.\u00a0 He became accustomed to seeing that smile everywhere.\u00a0 Because diversity has become such a popular, even trendy thing for a college to have, many students of color find themselves used as representatives of their colleges disproportionately.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But Shabazz&#8217;s story takes a fascinating turn.\u00a0 At the end of his senior year he paged through the next year&#8217;s application and didn&#8217;t see himself.\u00a0 Hmmm.\u00a0 Then, someone asked if he saw himself on the cover.\u00a0 And he looked and didn\u2019t see it and then he did.\u00a0 Do you?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13020\" title=\"Capture1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/09\/Capture11.JPG\" alt=\"Capture1\" width=\"356\" height=\"451\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That&#8217;s Diallo behind the excited girl on the left.\u00a0 Except Diallo had never been to a UW football game.\u00a0 You might recognize his face, transposed, from the original picture.\u00a0 Indeed, someone at UW had photoshopped Diallo into the image below in order to give the impression that attendance at the game was more diverse than it was.\u00a0 No Diallo:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13021\" title=\"Capture2\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/09\/Capture22.JPG\" alt=\"Capture2\" width=\"356\" height=\"448\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In that year 100,000 admission booklets went out with his face.\u00a0 More insidiously, 100,000 admission booklets went out using his face to give the illusion of diversity at the University of Wisconsin &#8211; Madison.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Diallo sued.\u00a0 He didn&#8217;t ask for a settlement.\u00a0 He said that he wanted a &#8220;budgetary apology.&#8221;\u00a0 He asked that, in compensation, the University put aside money for <em>actual <\/em>recruitment of minority students.\u00a0 He won.\u00a0 Ten million dollars was earmarked for diversity initiatives across the UW system.\u00a0 The irony in the whole thing is that UW requested photos of Shabazz shaking administrators&#8217; hands in reconciliation (i.e., photographic proof that everything was just fine).\u00a0 Oh, and also, the Governor vetoed part of the earmark and many initiatives wore off with turnover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What does this teach us?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First, notice that we have a commodification of diversity.\u00a0 It is considered useful for selling an institution.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Second, if real diversity isn&#8217;t possible, cosmetic diversity will do.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Third, Shabazz himself was dismissed even as his image was used over and over.\u00a0 Not only did they own the rights to his image and include him in many materials without the requirement that they ask or inform him, they literally took his image, cut it up, and used it to create a false picture.\u00a0 When Shabazz complained, they first tried to blow him off.\u00a0 So <em>he <\/em>wasn&#8217;t important to them, even as what he represented clearly was.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This suggests, fourth, that there was a real lack of a substantive dialog about and investment in race and diversity on the campus.\u00a0 Talk: difficult.\u00a0 Recruitment of minorities to a mostly white campus: tricky.\u00a0 Addressing the systematic educational underinvestment in minorities prior to arriving at UW: expensive.\u00a0 Retaining minorities in that environment: challenging.\u00a0 Photoshop: easy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Macon D., <a href=\"http:\/\/stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/care-more-about-token-diversity-than.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Stuff White People Do<\/a>, featured a similar situation in which Toronto&#8217;s Fun Guide (badly) photoshopped a black man onto their cover because their &#8220;goal was to depict the diversity of Toronto and its residents&#8221;
