{"id":12909,"date":"2009-09-05T03:11:37","date_gmt":"2009-09-05T08:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=12909"},"modified":"2012-10-17T02:33:22","modified_gmt":"2012-10-17T07:33:22","slug":"cultural-patterns-one-example-at-a-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/09\/05\/cultural-patterns-one-example-at-a-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Cultural Patterns: One Example At A Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We often present a single example of a cultural pattern.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a member of the relevant culture, that single example might ring true.\u00a0 That is, you might recognize it as one manifestation of something you see &#8220;out there&#8221; all the time.<\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s still just one example and it&#8217;s not very convincing to someone who is skeptical that the cultural pattern exists, especially if it&#8217;s subtle.<\/p>\n<p>But one advantage of this blog is that it&#8217;s cumulative.\u00a0 We can put up single manifestations of a cultural pattern and, even if it&#8217;s not very convincing at the time, the other evidence on the blog (and the evidence yet to come) may sway some skeptics.<\/p>\n<p>In that spirit, I offer you this screen shot of the front page of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gap.com\/browse\/info.do?cid=49294&amp;tid=gpemchm48b&amp;EV=8282009_N_GWM&amp;DI=58364012&amp;CD=GC_GPR\" target=\"_blank\">Gap website<\/a> (borrowed from <a href=\"http:\/\/stuffwhitepeopledo.blogspot.com\/2009\/08\/focus-obsessively-on-one-part-of-black.html\" target=\"_blank\">stuff white people do<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12911\" title=\"GapCrap\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/08\/GapCrap.JPG\" alt=\"GapCrap\" width=\"400\" height=\"234\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Notice that there is only one black woman included and she is wearing the &#8220;curvy&#8221; jean.\u00a0 This could be random, but I am going to suggest that it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 For more examples of black women&#8217;s butts and thighs being fetishized in U.S. culture (that may or may not convince you that this is a pattern) see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/01\/26\/the-fetishization-of-black-womens-behinds\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/15\/vogue-puts-a-woman-of-color-on-the-cover-and-manages-to-be-both-sexist-and-racist\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/02\/19\/vintage-jezebel-products\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/20\/germanys-green-party-uses-stereotypes-of-black-women-to-get-votes\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Wade is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">professor of sociology at Occidental College<\/a>.
