{"id":12659,"date":"2009-08-24T10:58:06","date_gmt":"2009-08-24T15:58:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=12659"},"modified":"2017-11-05T17:14:31","modified_gmt":"2017-11-05T22:14:31","slug":"marketing-america-to-the-vietnamese","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/24\/marketing-america-to-the-vietnamese\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketing &#8220;America&#8221; To Other Countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dmitriy T.M. sent us a link to an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/aw\/creative\/ad-of-the-day\/article_display.jsp?creativeId=270290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AdWeek<\/a>\u00a0post reporting that Miller Beer began advertising in Vietnam last week with this commercial:<\/p>\n<p>[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KG9H5_oKVd0[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p>Some sociologists who study international relations <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nation_branding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">apply the idea of the brand to nations<\/a>.\u00a0 Nations, they argue, can be seen as a product in a global marketplace. Australia, for example, is marketed as a rough and tumble place where we can get back to nature and find our true selves. Insofar as they can can control their brand, countries can draw tourism and increase demand for their exports (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/10\/10\/primitive-child-offers-cure-for-modern-ills\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/29\/fosters-beer-it-turns-out-not-particularly-australian-at-all\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> for Australian examples).<\/p>\n<p>The ad above is an excellent example of Miller capitalizing on the American brand: &#8220;It&#8217;s American Time. It&#8217;s Miller Time.&#8221; Notice also that the ad is in English and doesn&#8217;t feature anyone that looks Vietnamese. The\u00a0whiteness of the ad is purposeful.
