{"id":11138,"date":"2009-07-25T10:10:36","date_gmt":"2009-07-25T15:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=11138"},"modified":"2012-10-19T01:33:03","modified_gmt":"2012-10-19T06:33:03","slug":"marketing-asian-women-to-anti-feminist-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/25\/marketing-asian-women-to-anti-feminist-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketing Asian Women To Anti-Feminist Men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We often talk about things being gendered or racialized on this blog, but we haven&#8217;t talked much about how race is gendered and gender racialized.\u00a0 In <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/22\/asymmetry-in-interracial-relationships\/\" target=\"_self\">a previous post<\/a>, I wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>According to American cultural stereotypes, black <em>people<\/em>, both men and women, are more masculine than white people. Black men are seen as, somehow, more masculine than white men: they are, stereotypically, more aggressive, more violent, larger, more sexual, and more athletic. Black women, too, as seen as more masculine than white women: they are louder, bossier, more opinionated and, like men, more sexual and more athletic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Conversely, Asian people, both men and women, are often stereotyped as more feminine than white people.\u00a0 Asian men are seen as small and less muscular than white men; Asian women are seen as more passive and deferential than white women.<\/p>\n<p>Interracial marriage rates bear out this asymmetry: black women are less likely to marry white men than vice versa and Asian men are less likely to\u00a0 marry white women than vice versa (see <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/22\/asymmetry-in-interracial-relationships\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/12\/04\/raceethnicity-assimilation-and-asian-american-marriages\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The idea, specifically, that Asian women are more passive and deferential than white women, has been used to explain white men&#8217;s fetish for Asian women, Western men&#8217;s sex tourism in Asian countries, and Western men&#8217;s use of Asian mail-order bride services.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of these men, it is argued, want a subordinate partner and they find it difficult to meet a white\/American woman who is willing to play that role.\u00a0 You can actually hear a male sex tourist make this argument in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/04\/17\/sex-tourism-in-thailand\/\" target=\"_self\">this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I introduce all of these ideas in order to frame a screenshot sent in by Megan S.\u00a0 The screenshot is of the front page of a website (antimisandry.com) devoted to fighting misandry, or the &#8220;hatred of males as a sex.&#8221;\u00a0 The website purports to &#8220;cur[e] feminist indoctrination.&#8221;\u00a0 You&#8217;ll see that it is also advertising a dating site specializing in matching up white men with Chinese women:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11140\" title=\"Picture1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/07\/Picture12.png\" alt=\"Picture1\" width=\"612\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/07\/Picture12.png 1024w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2009\/07\/Picture12-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; I&#8217;m going to guess that, in this case, &#8220;anti-misandry&#8221; isn&#8217;t so much about encouraging women to stop hating men as it is about telling men they are entitled to a woman who will defer to them.<\/p>\n<p>Either that or&#8230; unfortunate random ad placement.<\/p>\n<p>Megan also thought <a href=\"http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5321027\/burned-by-real+life-romance-japanese-men-turn-to-fictional-characters\" target=\"_blank\">this post on men choosing fictional female characters as lovers<\/a> was related; you might also check out <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/12\/21\/guys-and-dolls\/\" target=\"_self\">our post on the documentary <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em><\/a> about men who have relationships with expensive and &#8220;functional&#8221; (if you know what I mean) life-size dolls.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UPDATE: <\/span><\/strong>The comments thread on this post is closed.\u00a0\u00a0I strongly suggest reading them, especially if you think that this post was reaching. <em>Very <\/em>interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Wade is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">professor of sociology at Occidental College<\/a>.
