{"id":10907,"date":"2009-07-24T10:58:57","date_gmt":"2009-07-24T15:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=10907"},"modified":"2017-09-16T17:53:08","modified_gmt":"2017-09-16T22:53:08","slug":"the-things-in-our-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/07\/24\/the-things-in-our-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"The Things In Our Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of us live in consumption economies unlike any in human history.\u00a0\u00a0 Consuming is a daily chore.\u00a0 Acquiring is easier than ever.<\/p>\n<p>What do you have?\u00a0 How much of it do you need?\u00a0 Do you have things that you don&#8217;t want?\u00a0 How do you manage the stuff that enters your home?\u00a0 Does it go?\u00a0 Or does it stay?\u00a0 Do you dispose of the disposable and semi-disposable goods?\u00a0 Or do you try to recycle them, even if only within the boundaries of your home?\u00a0 How do the shelves and drawers, the nooks and crannies of your living space, obscure our answers to these questions?\u00a0 What would it look like if we had to look at it all, all at once?<\/p>\n<p>Chinese artist Song Dong convinced his mother to allow him to display every item of her home as an art exhibit (article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/15\/arts\/design\/15song.html?pagewanted=2&amp;_r=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 She had lived in the same house for nearly 60 years.\u00a0 He arranged her belongings, in a museum, around a dismantled piece of the house.\u00a0 The result raises questions about consumption, economy, and the things in our lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Wade is a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lisa-wade.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professor of sociology at Occidental College<\/a>.
