is not the only, or likely even the main motivation.<\/p>\n<p>In this series, I share some ideas about why and how people of color are included in advertising aimed primarily at whites. \u00a0This post is about the inclusion of people of color in ads to invoke the idea of &#8220;color,&#8221; &#8220;flavor,&#8221; or &#8220;personality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Consider, this ad for Absolute Vodka Peach (&#8220;Find Your Flavor&#8221;) includes\u00a0two white and\u00a0two brown people, plus a set of silhouettes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1091\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-spice-4.jpg\" width=\"309\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollyoreilly.com\" target=\"_blank\">Holly F.<\/a> and Lafin T.J. sent in three Life cereal box covers.\u00a0 Notice that &#8220;regular&#8221; Life has white people on the cover, while cinnamon and maple and brown sugar flavors have people of color on their covers:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/112.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-62673\" alt=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/112-500x222.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/112-500x222.jpg 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/112.jpg 846w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In this pro-diversity ad, spice is literally used to represent diversity (via <a href=\"http:\/\/multicultclassics.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/5700-measuring-diversity.html\" target=\"_blank\">MultiCultClassics<\/a>). \u00a0(Just a\u00a0bit misguided too: Just a teaspoon or less of color, please.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1850 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/07\/race-just-a-teaspoon-of-diversity1.jpg\" width=\"306\" height=\"874\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This ad for Samba <em>Colore<\/em> by Swatch also uses a model of color:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1092\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-media-color-or-spice.jpg\" width=\"354\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Welcome to the Color Factory.&#8221;\u00a0 These two ads for a color photo printer and a color printer cartridge both use models of color alongside white models in order to express how &#8220;colorful&#8221; their product is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1089\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-471.jpg\" width=\"411\" height=\"548\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-media-color-or-spice-4.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1090 aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/race-media-color-or-spice-4.jpg\" width=\"433\" height=\"574\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bri sent in these four images (three from Gap and one from United Colors of Benneton).\u00a0 Each Gap ad is advertising a different product, with an emphasis on how many colors they come in (bottom right corner).\u00a0 They all, also, feature models of color. \u00a0Here&#8217;s just one of them:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7466\" alt=\"gap03\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/gap03.jpg\" width=\"528\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And, of course, the United Colors of Benneton is famous for its use of models of color in its ads, blending quite purposefully the idea of clothing colors and skin colors:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7467\" alt=\"unitedcolors\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/unitedcolors.jpg\" width=\"452\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally Joshua B. sent in this photo of two french fry holders, one with a black and one with a white woman, reading &#8220;never a dull moment, only tasty,&#8221; and &#8220;Is it wrong to think Arby&#8217;s all the time.&#8221;\u00a0 The black woman, then, is presented alongside the ideas of excitement and flavor:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12242\" alt=\"Arbys\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/Arbys1.jpg\" width=\"477\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/Arbys1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/files\/2008\/05\/Arbys1-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is also this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/29\/from-pale-to-pumped-with-racial-stereotypes\/\">Crystal Light ad campaign<\/a>\u00a0that compares water to a &#8220;pale&#8221; white woman and crystal light to a &#8220;pumped&#8221; black woman and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/11\/09\/selling-bread-with-blackness\/\" target=\"_self\">these ads for an Australian bread company<\/a>\u00a0that use Blackness to argue that their bread is not bland.<\/p>\n<p>This kind of advertising can easily be explained away as coincidence, but I think it&#8217;s a pattern. \u00a0Feel free to send in examples and counter examples if you see them.<\/p>\n<p><em>Next up: <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/16\/why-and-how-people-of-color-are-included-in-advertising-3rd-in-a-series\/\" target=\"_self\">Including people of color so as to make the product seem &#8220;hip,&#8221;
