{"id":10462,"date":"2009-08-01T10:29:23","date_gmt":"2009-08-01T15:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/?p=10462"},"modified":"2010-12-25T02:56:49","modified_gmt":"2010-12-25T07:56:49","slug":"what-we%e2%80%99ve-been-up-to-behind-your-back-july-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/08\/01\/what-we%e2%80%99ve-been-up-to-behind-your-back-july-2009\/","title":{"rendered":"Sociological Images Update (July 2009)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PARTY!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Please join us for the first ever Sociological Images party! <\/strong>We&#8217;d love to see all of you&#8211;sociologists and non-sociologists alike&#8211;in San Francisco on Sunday, August 9th <span><span>at 6pm <\/span><\/span>at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnnyfoleys.com\/\">Johnny Foley\u2019s Irish House<\/a><span><span>.\u00a0\u00a0 We want to meet you and we think it&#8217;d be super cool for you to meet each other, too.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>FROM THE ARCHIVES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sociological Images was born in July of 2007.\u00a0 In honor of our birthday, we point you to our very first post ever:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2007\/07\/24\/a-rare-photoshopping-leak\/\" target=\"_self\">Faith Hill re-touched for the cover of <em>Redbook<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One year later, we published a fascinating example of the white man&#8217;s burden.\u00a0 This time, however, it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/11\/the-white-womans-burden\/\" target=\"_self\">a white woman&#8217;s burden in the form of a Pampers commercial<\/a>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s something; you should check it out.<\/p>\n<p><span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>NEWLY ENRICHED POSTS <\/strong>(Look for what&#8217;s<strong> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>NEW!<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">)<\/span><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p>We added a third PostSecret postcard where someone confesses thoughts about race, while explaining that they are not racist.\u00a0 Ponder them <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/07\/05\/not-a-racist\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Our post about an Icelandic cartoon that portrayed <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/16\/icelandic-obamahillary-ad-obama-as-savage-cannibal\/\">Barack Obama as a cannibal <\/a>now includes an image of the <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">comic book<\/span> graphic novel <em>Barack the Barbarian<\/em>, thanks to sender-inner Lindsay.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Howard had some updated graphs on concentration of organic brands, so we updated our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/18\/who-owns-organic-brands\/\">who sells organics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To our post featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/04\/15\/evolve-trojan-ad\/\" target=\"_self\">ads that portray men as animals<\/a>, we added an advertising campaign by Jim Beam that suggests men are &#8220;stags&#8221; (has there ever been a word with more meanings?).<\/p>\n<p>In another food-related update, Amanda C. and Dmitriy T.M. both sent us material that we added to our post about <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/03\/25\/sexualizing-and-gendering-food\/\">sexualizing food<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie sent us links to some images of kids&#8217; t-shirts with sexual slogans, which we added to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/02\/03\/t-shirts-for-babies-and-children\/\">existing post<\/a> on the topic.<\/p>\n<p>At the suggestion of Glenn R., we added ads for Caramba Tequila to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/06\/27\/non-subtle-sex-in-advertising\/\" target=\"_self\">not-so-subliminal sex<\/a> and <a>ejaculation imagery<\/a> posts.\u00a0 We also added an image to the latter post sent in by Jeff G. and a commercial for Creme d&#8217;Or ice cream Jay L. brought to our attention. The commercial is a doozy.<\/p>\n<p>We added some very <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/02\/sex-sells\/\" target=\"_self\">scandalous ads for hearing aids<\/a> to our &#8220;sex sells&#8221; post.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel McC. J., from <a href=\"http:\/\/deeplyproblematic.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/do-you-know-what-older-man-can-give-you.html\" target=\"_blank\">Deeply Problematic<\/a>, sent us another example of efforts to protect women by telling women to protect themselves instead of targeting badly behaving men.\u00a0 We added it to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/03\/09\/whos-responsible-for-sexual-harassment\/\" target=\"_self\">our previous post telling women to stop men from sexually harassing them in the subway<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tricia V. sent us another example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/29\/resistance-to-objectifying-advertising\/\" target=\"_self\">resistance to advertising that objectifies women<\/a>.\u00a0 In this one, from Haiti, someone scrawled &#8220;Women&#8217;s bodies are not merchandise&#8221; across a full-sized billboard.<\/p>\n<p>The Huffington Post featured a slide show of billboards in New York called &#8220;Sex in the Sky.&#8221;\u00a0 Kiera S. thought it would make a good addition to our <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/06\/06\/what-warrants-a-slide-show\/\" target=\"_self\">&#8220;What Warrants a Slide Show&#8221; post<\/a>.\u00a0 We agreed.<\/p>\n<p>We added a Volkswagen ad to our post on vintage advertising suggesting that women are horrible (horrible!) drivers.\u00a0 See it <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/05\/13\/keep-your-wife-safe-with-goodyear-tires\/\" target=\"_self\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We added a vintage ad marketing Zippo lighters to &#8220;modern mothers&#8221; to our post featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/09\/18\/marlboros-for-mommies\/\" target=\"_self\">ads in which babies tell their moms to smoke Marlboros<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before the &#8220;obesity epidemic,&#8221; kids were just chubby.\u00a0 We added two additional material to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/30\/vintage-ad-for-chubby-fashions\/\" target=\"_self\">our post featuring vintage ads selling clothes for &#8220;chubby&#8221; kids<\/a>, one of them sent in by Holly M.<\/p>\n<p>Women LOVE to clean!\u00a0 We added a vintage ad to <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2008\/04\/08\/home-made-simple-squad-women-take-joy-in-cleaning\/\" target=\"_self\">a previous post about the joy of women&#8217;s work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We recently posted about a business called the Occasional Wife.\u00a0 A blogger at <a href=\"http:\/\/thegrandnarrative.wordpress.com\/2009\/07\/07\/korean-deliverymen\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Grand Narrative<\/a> pointed us to several companies along the theme of Hire-A-Hubby.\u00a0 We added them to our original <a>post on the social construction of &#8220;wife.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We updated a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2009\/01\/21\/pink-earplugs-for-your-beauty-sleep\/\">gendered marketing of products<\/a> with images of pink and blue scooters for the mobility impaired and a cordless screwdriver marketed to women by including a manicure set.
