{"id":579,"date":"2006-10-19T20:09:00","date_gmt":"2006-10-20T02:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2006\/10\/19\/wouldnt-the-moral-entrepreneurs-make-a-nice-name-for-a-band-2\/"},"modified":"2006-10-19T20:09:00","modified_gmt":"2006-10-20T02:09:00","slug":"wouldnt-the-moral-entrepreneurs-make-a-nice-name-for-a-band-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2006\/10\/19\/wouldnt-the-moral-entrepreneurs-make-a-nice-name-for-a-band-2\/","title":{"rendered":"wouldn&#8217;t the moral entrepreneurs make a nice name for a band?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/6608\/1089\/1600\/gomez.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/6608\/1089\/200\/gomez.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>i generally reserve howard becker&#8217;s term <em>moral entrepreneurs<\/em> for full-on self-righteous crusading reformers such as prohibitionists. yet one needn&#8217;t look far to find mellower <em>unplugged<\/em> and acoustic versions of the concept. <\/p>\n<p>chris riemenschneider, the <em>strib&#8217;s <\/em>fine music writer, offers a front-page story this morning on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/457\/story\/751879.html\">environmentally friendly concert tours<\/a>. performers such as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clifgreennotes.com\/musician\/band.php?id=1\">gomez<\/a><\/em>, the dave matthews band, pearl jam, jack johnson, bonnie raitt, and even the entire <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.warpedtour.com\/\">warped tour<\/a> <\/em>(!) have gone at least<em> a little<\/em> bit green.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthology.net\/cloudcult\/home.htm\">cloud cult<\/a> singer craig minowaare and others try to model environmentally friendly lifestyles without &#8220;sounding like some preachy folk singer.&#8221; what behaviors are they modeling?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\">* Using biodiesel tour bus.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-size:85%\">* Buying renewable-energy &#8220;credits&#8221; to offset fuel emissions.<br \/>* Using soy-based ink and recycled paper in merchandise.<br \/>* Selling organic cotton T-shirts.<br \/>* Serving organic food backstage.<br \/>* Minimizing bus idling.<br \/>* Staying at hotels identified as eco-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Symbolic-Crusade-Politics-American-Temperance\/dp\/0252013123\">gusfield<\/a> pointed out, status politics are at play when uppers tell lowers how they should live. but bands such as <em>gomez <\/em>aren&#8217;t really cultural elites (yet) nor are they too wealthy to feel the extra cost of their green livin&#8217;. so all this seems quite socially responsible to me, though i wonder how ol&#8217;
