{"id":482,"date":"2006-01-14T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2006-01-14T21:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2006\/01\/14\/soctalk-january-17-and-lawtalks-january-28-2\/"},"modified":"2006-01-14T15:35:00","modified_gmt":"2006-01-14T21:35:00","slug":"soctalk-january-17-and-lawtalks-january-28-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2006\/01\/14\/soctalk-january-17-and-lawtalks-january-28-2\/","title":{"rendered":"soctalk january 17 and lawtalks january 28"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/6608\/1089\/1600\/talk.0.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"163\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/6608\/1089\/200\/talk.0.jpg\" width=\"175\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>here&#8217;s an update on a minntalk this week and a small minnconference (minnminiconference?) next week:<\/p>\n<p>1. i&#8217;m speaking with shelly schaefer on <em>voting and the civic reintegration of former prisoners <\/em>this tuesday as part of the sociology department <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soc.umn.edu\/workshop\/index.php\">workshop series<\/a>. this one was <a href=\"http:\/\/chrisuggen.blogspot.com\/2005\/11\/bumped-not-that-anyone-would-fly-in.html\">bumped<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/chrisuggen.blogspot.com\/2005\/10\/iowa-court-upholds-mass-restoration-of.html\">last semester<\/a> for a really impressive roster of job candidates. the workshops are held in 1109 social sciences from 4-5:15 and all are welcome.<\/p>\n<p>2. those interested in racial disparities in punishment and felon voting research might be more interested in <em>silenced voices: the constitutionality and legality of felon disenfranchisement provisions<\/em> on saturday, january 28 at the university of minnesota law school. law school professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.umn.edu\/facultyprofiles\/warrenc.htm\">carl warren<\/a> is organizing the conference as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.umn.edu\/mootcourt\/index.htm\">national civil rights moot court competition<\/a>, which this year will examine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/programs\/dem_vr_lit_johnson.html\">johnson v. bush<\/a>. all are welcome and attendance is free. attorneys can even get continuing legal education credit* if they contact the organizers in advance.<\/p>\n<p>this should be really good &#8212; i know i&#8217;ll learn a lot. marc mauer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentencingproject.org\/\">sentencing project<\/a> and <em>race to incarcerate<\/em> will be speaking on racial disparities. i&#8217;m especially eager to meet rep. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.leg.state.mn.us\/members\/members.asp?district=58B\">keith ellison<\/a>, who has introduced legislation to reenfranchise probationers and parolees. other speakers include catherine weiss of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/\">brennan center<\/a>, art eisenberg of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyclu.org\/index.html\">nyclu<\/a>, and gary dickey, counsel and advisor to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.governor.state.ia.us\/\">iowa governor<\/a> tom vilsack. i&#8217;ll be doing an overview in the morning session, which will overlap with my department talk. events will be held at the minnesota law school from 9-3, but i don&#8217;t have the specific rooms yet. here&#8217;s the tentative schedule:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><em><strong>9:00 a.m. to 9:10 a.m.<\/strong><br \/><\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Welcome and brief description of the facts and procedural posture of Johnson v. Governor of State of Florida, 405 F. 3d 1214 (11th Cir. 2005).<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:10 a.m. to 9:50 a.m.<\/strong><br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Overview: Felon Disenfranchisement and Democracy. <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><em>Prof. <strong>Christopher Uggen<\/strong>, Associate Chair, University of Minnesota, Department of Sociology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>9:50 a.m. to Noon.<\/strong> <\/em><em><strong>Silenced Voices<br \/><\/strong>Panelists will examine the legal, constitutional, societal and policy-making implications of felon disenfranchisement provisions; measures that have been taken to address them, e.g. executive orders, legislation; and litigation that has challenged them, e.g. Johnson v. Governor of State of Florida; &shy;Muntaqim v. Coombe&shy;&shy;, 366 F. 3d 102 (2nd Cir. 2004) and Farrakhan v. Washington, 338 F. 3d 1009 (9th Cir. 2003). The panel will consist of:<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><strong>Catherine Weiss<\/strong><\/span>,<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Associate Counsel, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. The Brennan Center represents the plaintiff\u00c2\u0092s class in the Johnson v. Governor of State of Florida; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><strong><em>Art Eisenberg<\/em><\/strong> Litigation Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union. The NYCLU submitted an Amicus brief in support of the Plaintiff\u00c2\u0092s position in &shy;Muntaqim v. Coombe&shy;&shy;; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><strong><em>Rep. Keith Ellison<\/em><\/strong> of the Minnesota House of Representatives. The author of legislation to restore the voting rights of people who have been convicted of felonies and who are on probation or parole; <\/span><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><strong><em>Gary Dickey, Jr<\/em><\/strong>., General Counsel and Policy Advisor to Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa who by executive order restored the voting rights of ex-felons in Iowa; <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:85%\"><strong><em>Marc Mauer<\/em><\/strong>, Executive Director, Sentencing Project, Washington DC; and <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size:85%\">Clinical Prof. <strong><em>Carl M. Warren<\/em><\/strong>, faculty advisor to the University of Minnesota Law School\u00c2\u0092s Wm. E.
