{"id":474,"date":"2005-12-06T19:15:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-07T01:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2005\/12\/06\/snitchin-2\/"},"modified":"2005-12-06T19:15:00","modified_gmt":"2005-12-07T01:15:00","slug":"snitchin-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2005\/12\/06\/snitchin-2\/","title":{"rendered":"snitchin&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/6608\/1089\/1600\/snitching.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"163\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos1.blogger.com\/blogger\/6608\/1089\/200\/snitching.jpg\" width=\"136\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>a dvd entitled &#8220;<em>stop snitching<\/em>&#8221; features armed men threatening those who would roll over on others as police informants (e.g., &#8220;we got a lot of rats up here we wanna expose &#8230; it ain\u2019t too many of \u2018em, cause we deal with them\u201d). <em>stop snitching<\/em> dvds and t-shirts quickly fanned outward from baltimore to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/pg\/05318\/606007.stm\">pittsburgh<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/massachusetts\/articles\/2005\/12\/03\/aclu_says_t_shirt_tied_to_free_speech\/?rss_id=Boston+Globe+--+City\/Region+News\">boston<\/a> and elsewhere, fueled in part by the appearance of basketball player carmelo anthony in the video and entrepreneurs publicizing the phenomenon with sites such as <a href=\"http:\/\/stopsnitching.com\/\">stopsnitching.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>i haven&#8217;t seen any t-shirts in the midwest, but the dvd has been a very hot topic on the east coast for the past year. in fact, the baltimore police even put together a short video response to <em>stop snitching,<\/em> titled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.baltimore.md.us\/government\/police\/\">keep talking<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/volokh.com\/archives\/archive_2005_11_27-2005_12_03.shtml#1133566817\">volokh<\/a> reports on the constitutionality of seizing stop snitching t-shirts and the ejection from courtrooms of those wearing them. the story also raises sociological questions about the use of informants, police-community relations, and violence as &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ac.wwu.edu\/~jimi\/cjbib\/selfhelp.htm\">self-help<\/a>.&#8221; the phenomenon seems to be driven in part by <a href=\"http:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=613521\/\">law enforcement practices<\/a> that rely increasingly on the use of informants. as the police have upped the pressure on informants, the &#8220;inform-ees&#8221; have applied countervailing pressure: violence and the threat of violence.<\/p>\n<p>so, what&#8217;s the solution? large-scale use of snitches can be divisive to a community and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miami.com\/mld\/miamiherald\/news\/nation\/13250617.htm\">jailhouse informants<\/a> are <em>notoriously<\/em> inaccurate. still, witness intimidation and &#8220;street Justice&#8221; can be absolutely debilitating (in <a href=\"http:\/\/today.reuters.com\/news\/newsArticle.aspx?type=worldNews&amp;storyID=2005-12-06T163558Z_01_SIB659666_RTRUKOC_0_US-IRAQ.xml\">iraq<\/a> as in baltimore). with regard to the video&#8217;s popularity, it has clearly tapped into the strained relationships between young african american men and law enforcement, as well as the continuing popularity of thug iconography.<\/p>\n<p>on the latter point, i was struck by a recent picture of mr. anthony posing in what appeared to be his home office. he had distanced himself from <em>stop snitching<\/em>, saying: &#8220;I&#8217;m completely against violence and drugs \u2014 that&#8217;s not me&#8230; I&#8217;ve lost friends to violence.
