{"id":307,"date":"2007-10-27T21:11:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-28T03:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2007\/10\/27\/free-at-last\/"},"modified":"2007-10-27T21:11:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-28T03:11:00","slug":"free-at-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2007\/10\/27\/free-at-last\/","title":{"rendered":"free at last"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/blogger_import\/172-georgia-00.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126223228235267026\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/blogger_import\/173-georgia-00.jpg\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>i wrote about genarlow wilson&#8217;s case a couple of times this year (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogger_import\/887-life-on-hold-part-.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogger_import\/888-life-on-hold.html\">here<\/a>), and i&#8217;m happy to report that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/27\/us\/27georgia.html?_r=1&amp;oref=slogin\">genarlow was released from prison<\/a> yesterday. he served more than 2 years of the 10 year sentence he received for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl. he was 17 at the time. in a 4-3 ruling, the georgia supreme court said the sentence was &#8220;grossly disproportionate&#8221; to the crime and was cruel and unusual punishment.<\/p>\n<p>before the incident, genarlow had never been in trouble with the law; he was a strong student, an athlete, and and homecoming king of his high school.  now 21, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/metro\/content\/metro\/stories\/2007\/10\/26\/genarlow_1026.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_newstab\">he plans to go to college and major in sociology<\/a>.  state lawmakers  announced that they have raised $4000 for a scholarship fund for wilson, and jesse jackson has promised another $5000.  i hope the academic world welcomes him and he has an easy transition back into the community.  welcome home, genarlow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>i wrote about genarlow wilson&#8217;s case a couple of times this year (here and here), and i&#8217;m happy to report that genarlow was released from prison yesterday. he served more than 2 years of the 10 year sentence he received for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl. he was 17 at the time.
