{"id":1651,"date":"2012-12-12T16:13:22","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T22:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/?p=1651"},"modified":"2014-02-12T11:51:54","modified_gmt":"2014-02-12T17:51:54","slug":"11-year-old-attempts-carjacking-at-gunpoint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2012\/12\/12\/11-year-old-attempts-carjacking-at-gunpoint\/","title":{"rendered":"11-year-old attempts carjacking at gunpoint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Oregon, an 11-year-old boy is being arraigned on allegations of first- and second-degree robbery and unlawful use of a firearm.\u00a0 His accomplice was a 7-year-old boy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/portland\/index.ssf\/2012\/12\/dad_boy_face_gun_charges_linke.html#incart_river_default#incart_m-rpt-2\" target=\"_blank\">The Oregonian<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Police said the 11-year-old was armed with a loaded .22-caliber derringer and threatened Amy Garrett, 22, in her pickup while she was parked at Freedom Foursquare Church about noon Saturday. Garrett said the 11-year-old and a 7-year-old boy, carrying a backpack with bullets, demanded her pickup, then money and her phone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The boy&#8217;s father was charged with a relatively new law that makes it a crime to leave a gun unsecured and within reach of a child.\u00a0 The father is a convicted felon, and he has had two child neglect and abuse complaints filed against him in the last year.\u00a0 The 11-year-old boy and his two younger siblings were taken into protective custody.<\/p>\n<p>A neighbor claimed to have called police several times over the past 18 months with complaints about vandalism and trespassing involving the then 10-year-old boy.\u00a0 The young age of the attempted carjacker and his relatively long history of contact with police brings to mind <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2007\/01\/16\/nathaniel-abraham-emerges-on-friday\/\" target=\"_blank\">the case of Nathaniel Abraham<\/a>; Abraham was given a real opportunity when he was sentenced as a juvenile; unfortunately, he seems to be struggling in prison as an adult.<\/p>\n<p>But back to the current situation with an 11-year-old boy facing first- and second-degree robbery and weapons charges.\u00a0\u00a0 What a strange and sad case!\u00a0 What in the world would an 11-year-old do if his victim had surrendered her vehicle?\u00a0 Would he have attempted to drive it off?\u00a0 To where and to what end?
