{"id":1552,"date":"2012-08-08T09:11:30","date_gmt":"2012-08-08T15:11:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/?p=1552"},"modified":"2012-08-08T09:28:15","modified_gmt":"2012-08-08T15:28:15","slug":"okay-violence-is-down-but-have-mass-shootings-increased","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2012\/08\/08\/okay-violence-is-down-but-have-mass-shootings-increased\/","title":{"rendered":"okay violence is down, but have *mass* shootings increased?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over on facebook, my friends Raka and Jay asked similar questions about the long-term drop in violence discussed in <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2012\/08\/07\/are-we-more-violent-than-ever-before\/\">the previous post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;They asked, and you answered, about \u201cviolence\u201d But what they seem to be thinking about is mass killings by individuals. Are those also on the decline in the US? Who has data on that?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I&#8217;d be interested in knowing the rise and fall rates of different kinds of crimes &#8212; one on one homicide versus the movie theater\/Sikh temple sort. Michael Hout? Chris Uggen?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, criminologist <a href=\"http:\/\/boston.com\/community\/blogs\/crime_punishment\/2012\/08\/no_increase_in_mass_shootings.html\">James Alan Fox<\/a> has conducted precisely this sort of analysis.\u00a0His chart below shows the annual number of mass shootings, offenders, and victims in each year from 1980 to 2010.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/Fox2012.jpg\">\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1553\" title=\"Fox2012\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/Fox2012-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/Fox2012-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/Fox2012.jpg 481w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Professor Fox\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/boston.com\/community\/blogs\/crime_punishment\/2012\/08\/no_increase_in_mass_shootings.html\">describes<\/a> how\u00a0mass shootings remain quite rare in the U.S. (about 20 incidents and 100 victims per year) relative to other homicides\u00a0(about 15,000 victims per year), as illustrated in the figure above.\u00a0Since 1980, I see variation, but no strong upward or downward trend\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0a non-pattern\u00a0that\u00a0we sometimes call\u00a0&#8220;trendless fluctuation,&#8221; at least until we can identify\u00a0its correlates (e.g., a pattern that looks like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2012\/07\/09\/unemployment-and-deportation\/\">this<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is important to bear in mind, as Dr. Fox points out, before (a) we assume there&#8217;s been a big\u00a0increase in mass shootings; and, (b) we attribute this\u00a0rise to factors that appear to be steadily increasing or declining, such as weapons technology or the availability of mental health care. I&#8217;ve no doubt that weapons and mental health care play\u00a0a big\u00a0role in such cases, but it is hard to see how either\u00a0factor could explain the pattern shown above\u00a0&#8212; that is, to\u00a0predict something that goes <em>up and down<\/em> with something that just goes up or just goes down over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>The only\u00a0points I&#8217;d add to Professor Fox&#8217;s careful analysis is to note that when\u00a0the numbers are this small the picture could change very quickly. First, it might change if one examined different thresholds or constructed other definitions of mass killings. Second, the chart would look radically different if, heaven forbid, there are\u00a0more events in the next year or two that push the total\u00a0number of victims past 150.
