The\u00a0haunting photo below is\u00a0from\u00a0a similar <a href=\"http:\/\/ackermangruber.com\/projects\/served-out\/\">series<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ackermangruber.com\/films\/trapped-film\/\">film<\/a> on the\u00a0emergence of prisons and jails as the nation&#8217;s default mental health care facilities.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AckermanGruber_Trapped_Suicide_Watch1.jpg\">\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1536\" title=\"Suicide Watch\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AckermanGruber_Trapped_Suicide_Watch1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AckermanGruber_Trapped_Suicide_Watch1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AckermanGruber_Trapped_Suicide_Watch1.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In my view, both series dramatize how\u00a0prisons must increasingly\u00a0serve populations and perform functions for which they are poorly suited.\u00a0Operating\u00a0hospices, nursing homes,\u00a0and psychiatric\u00a0hospitals is certainly\u00a0difficult enough on the outside.\u00a0Attempting to replicate\u00a0such institutions\u00a0<em>within<\/em> prisons is often inordinately more difficult and costly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AgingDyingInPrison_emergency.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1537\" title=\"AgingDyingInPrison_emergency\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AgingDyingInPrison_emergency-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AgingDyingInPrison_emergency-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/08\/AgingDyingInPrison_emergency.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are, of course, alternative approaches. I&#8217;ll offer my two cents on the subject at the American Sociological Association meetings on August 18, but I&#8217;m really looking forward to learning from my fellow panelists (Bruce Western, Katherine Beckett, and Marie Gottschalk).
