The picture above,\u00a0taken from\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/10.1086\/664824\">new article<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.albany.edu\/sociology\/fac_profile_King.shtml\">Ryan King<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ssc.wisc.edu\/soc\/faculty\/show-person.php?person_id=1423\">Mike Massoglia<\/a>,\u00a0doesn&#8217;t seem\u00a0so complicated by comparison. I won&#8217;t belabor all the details, but one basic idea was to ask whether the United States deported more people for criminal behavior when unemployment\u00a0was on the rise. Sure enough,\u00a0unemployment and criminal deportation tracked each other very closely from about 1941 to 1986 (since 1987, deportations\u00a0have more closely\u00a0tracked the steep rise in incarceration). The chart shows year-to-year changes in each measure, with\u00a0the spikes in deportation (the solid line) corresponding to similar spikes in unemployment (the dashed line). Of course, no picture is <em>that <\/em>simple; there&#8217;s always\u00a0a\u00a0real danger that\u00a0such correlations could be due to chance or to factors we failed to consider.
