{"id":1456,"date":"2012-03-25T17:05:57","date_gmt":"2012-03-25T23:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/?p=1456"},"modified":"2012-03-25T17:05:57","modified_gmt":"2012-03-25T23:05:57","slug":"dont-run-in-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2012\/03\/25\/dont-run-in-public\/","title":{"rendered":"(don&#8217;t) run in public"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/03\/usjlp_capehart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1457\" title=\"usjlp_capehart\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2012\/03\/usjlp_capehart-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In the wake of Trayvon Martin&#8217;s killing, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/jonathan-capehart\/2011\/02\/24\/AB1tR7I_page.html\">Jonathan Capehart<\/a>\u00a0relayed a couple of the\u00a0&#8220;it ain&#8217;t\u00a0right, it ain&#8217;t fair, but that&#8217;s\u00a0the way it is&#8221; lessons he\u00a0was taught\u00a0in youth:\u00a0<em>don&#8217;t run in public, lest someone think you&#8217;re suspicious<\/em>; and,\u00a0<em>don&#8217;t run while carrying anything in your hands, lest someone think you stole something<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve followed and admired Mr. Capehart&#8217;s clear and powerful writing since we met in the US-Japan Leadership Program. We don&#8217;t know each other well, but I happened to have this picture of us onscreen\u00a0when I came across\u00a0his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/post-partisan\/post\/under-suspicion-the-killing-of-trayvon-martin\/2011\/03\/04\/gIQAz4F4KS_blog.html\">Washington Post<\/a>\u00a0op-ed and appearance on <a href=\"http:\/\/mojoe.msnbc.msn.com\/_news\/2012\/03\/22\/10812737-jonathan-capehart-on-why-trayvon-martins-death-affected-him-personally\">MSNBC<\/a>. No, I&#8217;m not a stalker. I&#8217;d been prepping lecture slides\u00a0for an upper-division sociology class, using\u00a0the photo as a representation of\u00a0&#8220;social drinking&#8221;\u00a0as\u00a0a respectable and sophisticated activity for upwardly mobile young adults.*<\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s the rub.\u00a0When a black male is running down the street,\u00a0we don&#8217;t tend to notice his respectability, sophistication, or upward mobility &#8212;\u00a0let alone\u00a0his youth\u00a0or innocence. Yet\u00a0the other four people in the picture can generally run with impunity, donning hoodies if\u00a0we wish.
