{"id":1114,"date":"2010-01-25T02:00:24","date_gmt":"2010-01-25T08:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/?p=1114"},"modified":"2010-01-25T02:03:19","modified_gmt":"2010-01-25T08:03:19","slug":"compassion-from-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2010\/01\/25\/compassion-from-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"compassion from prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2010\/01\/heart_prison_349_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1115\" title=\"heart_prison_349_1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/files\/2010\/01\/heart_prison_349_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a>The <em>Salem Statesman-Journal<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.statesmanjournal.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=20081240348\" target=\"_blank\">ran a story<\/a> today highlighting the compassion of inmates in the Oregon State Penitentiary.\u00a0 Guys inside the prison read a story about a 2-year-old girl who was hit by a truck and killed in November; her family was unable to afford a gravestone, so her grave was unmarked.<\/p>\n<p>Inmates were touched by the story and donated $670 for a gravestone.\u00a0 The money was collected\u00a0from guys who generally\u00a0make between $40 &#8211; $100 per month.\u00a0 They had never met the girl or her family, but they had empathy for them and wanted to help.\u00a0 More than just thinking about it, they dug deep and contributed in a very meaningful way.As one of the inmates said:\u00a0 &#8220;Even though we&#8217;re in prison, we still have hearts.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the guys mentioned in the story have been my students.\u00a0 I have been amazed by the generosity of inmates in donating to families and organizations in the community.\u00a0 The feel compelled to give back in big and small ways, and &#8211; usually without public recognition or fanfare &#8211; they reach out with whatever help they can offer to children in need.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t get to hear about these stories very often.\u00a0 I&#8217;m glad to be able to post a positive story within the realm of public criminology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Salem Statesman-Journal ran a story today highlighting the compassion of inmates in the Oregon State Penitentiary.\u00a0 Guys inside the prison read a story about a 2-year-old girl who was hit by a truck and killed in November; her family was unable to afford a gravestone, so her grave was unmarked.
