<\/a><\/p>\nWhat Karl Marx’s\u00a0“The Communist Manifesto”\u00a0<\/em>was to the 19th\u00a0Century, Gene\u00a0Sharp’s “From Dictatorship To Democracy”<\/em>\u00a0 is to our globalized era.The book has spread like a prairie fire since it\u00a0was written 20 years ago and has been translated by activists into more than 30 languages. It has become the bible of\u00a0nonviolent revolution in the\u00a0Ukraine, Tunisia, Eygpt, Serbia, Iran, Burma, Georgia, Belarus,\u00a0and numerous other locales.<\/p>\n In\u00a0his manifesto, Sharp quotes a 14th\u00a0Century\u00a0parable by Liu-Ju:<\/p>\n <\/em><\/strong>“In the feudal state of Chu an\u00a0old man survived by keeping monkeys in his service. \u00a0The people of Chu\u00a0called him \u201cjugong\u201d (monkey master). Each morning, the old man would assemble\u00a0the monkeys in his courtyard, and order the eldest one to lead the others to the mountains to gather fruits from bushes and trees. It was the rule that each\u00a0monkey had to give one-tenth of\u00a0his collection to the old man. \u00a0Those who failed to do so\u00a0would be ruthlessly \ufb02ogged. \u00a0All the monkeys suffered\u00a0bitterly, but dared not complain.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n “One day, a small monkey asked the other monkeys: ‘Did the old man plant all the fruit trees and bushes?’\u00a0 The others said:\u00a0\u00a0‘No, they grew naturally,’ The small monkey further asked:\u00a0\u00a0‘Can\u2019t we take the fruits without the old man\u2019s permission?’ The others replied: ‘Yes, we all can.’ T<\/em><\/strong>he small monkey continued:\u00a0‘Then,\u00a0why should we depend on the old man; why must we all serve him?’<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n “Before the small monkey was able to \ufb01nish his\u00a0statement,\u00a0all the monkeys suddenly became\u00a0enlightened and awakened.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n “O<\/em>n the same night, watching that the old man had fallen asleep, the monkeys tore down all the barricades of the\u00a0stockade in which they\u00a0were con\ufb01ned, and destroyed the\u00a0stockade entirely. \u00a0They also took the fruits the old man had in storage, brought all with them to the woods, and\u00a0never\u00a0returned. The old man \ufb01nally died\u00a0of starvation.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Yu-li-zi says, \u201cSome men in the world rule their people by tricks and not by righteous principles. Aren\u2019t they just like the monkey master? They\u00a0are not aware of their muddle-headedness. As soon as their people become enlightened, their tricks no longer work.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
