{"id":233,"date":"2016-01-20T19:32:22","date_gmt":"2016-01-21T01:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/methods\/?p=233"},"modified":"2017-06-29T10:29:19","modified_gmt":"2017-06-29T15:29:19","slug":"alejandro-baer-on-discussion-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/methods\/2016\/01\/20\/alejandro-baer-on-discussion-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Alejandro Baer on Discussion Groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this episode, we talk with <a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/abaer\">Alejandro Baer<\/a>, Associate Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>In this study, Alejandro and his colleagues sought to understand the specific discourse around anti-semitic sentiments amongst different cultural groups in Spain. To study this difficult to measure construct, the\u00a0researchers created homogenous discussion groups of 7 to 9 people, led by a trained moderator.\u00a0Participants were of similar demographics, leading to a \u2018group discourse mode\u2019 that revealed the structures of meaning different groups use to discuss their views on minority groups.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;When you design your groups, they have to be internally homogenous and externally heterogeneous. All of the individuals of one group share certain similarities in terms of age, political orientation, or of religious origin. You cannot put together left wing activists with conservative religious individuals of a totally different age. That&#8217;s not the idea.
