The Weight of One Word"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nearly five years ago, the Center published two blog articles, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/another-genocide-declaration-this-one-matters\/\"><em>Another Genocide Declaration: This One Matters<\/em><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/berlins-message-to-ankara-learn-from-us\/\"><em>Berlin\u2019s Message to Ankara<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>detailing the importance of Germany\u2019s recognition of the Armenian genocide. Then, Germany had just become the thirteenth country to formally declare the targeted destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire <em>as genocide. <\/em>To many scholars, Germany\u2019s recognition of the genocide was the most important official recognition, not only because of Germany\u2019s support for the Ottoman military but also because the Armenian genocide paved the way for the horrors of the Holocaust just over two decades later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/Peace-of-Art-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/Peace-of-Art-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3397\" width=\"468\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/Peace-of-Art-2.png 790w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/Peace-of-Art-2-300x179.png 300w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/Peace-of-Art-2-768x459.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond that, back in 2016, it was nearly inconceivable for the United States to recognize the Armenian genocide in any meaningful sense. Several Presidential candidates campaigned on the promise of recognition, only for the idea to be eschewed by the realities of contemporary geopolitics. Finally, in October 2019, the House of Representatives passed a nonbinding resolution formally acknowledging the genocide. In December, the Senate followed suit. Praising the vote, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz tweeted, \u201cthe Armenian Genocide is historical fact, and the denial of that fact is a continuation of the genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3396\" width=\"365\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/files\/2021\/04\/IMG_0342-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em>UMN student Matt Wallow<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, two years later, a sitting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/24\/statement-by-president-joe-biden-on-armenian-remembrance-day\/\">President has publicly recognized the mass murder of the Armenian people as <em>genocide<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>It\u2019s a momentous occasion and caps decades of advocacy and awareness building by Armenian-Americans, nearly all of which are in some way connected to victims and survivors of the genocide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Center for Holocaust &amp; Genocide Studies was founded nearly 25 years ago, it was among the first university centers in the country to do research and actively advocate for education and recognition of the Armenian genocide, to such an extent that the Center was sued by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/amp\/story\/2012\/05\/04\/qa-rotenberg\">Turkish nationalists attempting to stifle our work<\/a>. The Center\u2019s founder, Dr. Stephen Feinstein, enjoyed a strong partnership with the Twin Cities Armenian community, something we\u2019re fortunate to count on to this day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now with President Biden\u2019s remarks, the United States joins the nearly three-dozen nations in affirming the historical veracity of the Armenian genocide.
