{"id":2805,"date":"2019-09-16T17:19:40","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T17:19:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/?p=2805"},"modified":"2019-09-23T14:08:36","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T14:08:36","slug":"scholar-on-the-middle-east-denied-entry-into-the-united-states-by-homeland-security-raises-disturbing-political-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/holocaust-genocide\/scholar-on-the-middle-east-denied-entry-into-the-united-states-by-homeland-security-raises-disturbing-political-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Scholar on the Middle East Denied Entry into the United States by Homeland Security Raises Disturbing Political Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Thomas  Schmidinger teaches at the University of Vienna in <g class=\"gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"13\" data-gr-id=\"13\">Austria  and<\/g> is both secretary-general of the Austrian Society for the <g class=\"gr_ gr_16 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"16\" data-gr-id=\"16\">Promotion  of<\/g> <g class=\"gr_ gr_19 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"19\" data-gr-id=\"19\">Kurdology  and<\/g> coeditor of the Vienna Kurdish Studies Yearbook.<br><br>He is an expert on Syria, Iraq, and Iran and the author of a number of books on migration, cultural integration, and the Middle East, several of which have been translated by U.S. publishers.<br><br>Dr. Schmidinger was invited by multiple U.S. Universities, institutions,  and bookstores to give a series of lectures this September on his newest book, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/secure.pmpress.org\/index.php?l=product_detail&amp;p=1001\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Battle for the Mountain of the Kurds: Self-Determination and Ethnic Cleansing in the Afrin <g class=\"gr_ gr_20 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"20\" data-gr-id=\"20\">Region<\/g> of Rojava<\/em><\/a>   (PM Press, 2019). The organizers and publishers worked for months on the book tour, and he had all travel plans and papers in order.  Everything was set, or so it seemed.<br><br>When Dr. Schmidinger arrived at the boarding area on <g class=\"gr_ gr_25 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"25\" data-gr-id=\"25\">Thursday<\/g> September 12th, 2019 for the  connecting flight from Amsterdam to Minneapolis,  where he previously  spent a year as a research fellow at the University  of Minnesota, he  was detained and questioned by airline security about  his research in  Syria, Iraq, and Iran and his travels to these  countries. The security personnel expressed their assurances that he would be allowed to board,  but they needed to get the go-ahead from  Washington, D.C. Then, the unexpected happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>His travel was  denied with absolutely no \nexplanation by the U.S. Department of Homeland  Security. Dr.Schmidinger\n could not fly despite the U.S. Embassy in  Vienna stating that there is\n no formal travel ban from the U.S. State  Department against him and \ndespite having a valid Ten Year Multiple  Entry Visa granted recently \nfor a conference in Rhode Island just last  year in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><g class=\"gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"23\" data-gr-id=\"23\">This  is<\/g> clearly a politically motivated action <g class=\"gr_ gr_24 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"24\" data-gr-id=\"24\">by  the<\/g> U.S. Department of  Homeland Security who have banned many <g class=\"gr_ gr_25 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"25\" data-gr-id=\"25\">scholars  and<\/g> activists, as <g class=\"gr_ gr_26 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"26\" data-gr-id=\"26\">well  as<\/g> PM Press authors, from entering the country.  Along with <g class=\"gr_ gr_28 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"28\" data-gr-id=\"28\">the  reprehensible<\/g> travel ban of people from six  Muslim-majority <g class=\"gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"29\" data-gr-id=\"29\">countries  and<\/g> growing crackdowns on immigrants <g class=\"gr_ gr_30 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"30\" data-gr-id=\"30\">and  refugees<\/g>, Homeland <g class=\"gr_ gr_31 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"31\" data-gr-id=\"31\">Security  seems<\/g> to be increasing their scrutiny <g class=\"gr_ gr_32 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"32\" data-gr-id=\"32\">of  people<\/g> who are critical of  U.S. domestic and foreign policy. They <g class=\"gr_ gr_33 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"33\" data-gr-id=\"33\">are  secretly<\/g> placing them on the  No-fly List without explanation. <g class=\"gr_ gr_34 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"34\" data-gr-id=\"34\">The  problem<\/g> is getting worse, and <g class=\"gr_ gr_35 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"35\" data-gr-id=\"35\">the  political<\/g> consequences are serious <g class=\"gr_ gr_36 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"36\" data-gr-id=\"36\">and  disturbing.<\/g>No-fly list.  No-drive list. No-walk list. No-talk list. <g class=\"gr_ gr_37 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"37\" data-gr-id=\"37\">When  will<\/g> it end?<br><br>Dr.  Schmidinger pondered these questions and <g class=\"gr_ gr_40 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"40\" data-gr-id=\"40\">more  on<\/g> his return trip to  Vienna, \u201cDoes Homeland Security now <g class=\"gr_ gr_41 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"41\" data-gr-id=\"41\">prevent  scholars<\/g> on Iraq, Syria,  Iran or Jihadism to enter the U.S.? Do <g class=\"gr_ gr_42 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"42\" data-gr-id=\"42\">they  prevent<\/g> other scholars on  Kurdish Studies to enter the U.S.? Do <g class=\"gr_ gr_43 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"43\" data-gr-id=\"43\">they  prevent<\/g> people who work <g class=\"gr_ gr_44 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"44\" data-gr-id=\"44\">in  <g class=\"gr_ gr_39 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"39\" data-gr-id=\"39\">deradicalisation<\/g><\/g> and rehabilitation of  Jihadis? Did they get some  Turkish propaganda lies and <g class=\"gr_ gr_45 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"45\" data-gr-id=\"45\">follow  instructions<\/g> from Ankara? I <g class=\"gr_ gr_46 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"46\" data-gr-id=\"46\">really  don&#8217;t<\/g> know, but I would be curious <g class=\"gr_ gr_47 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"47\" data-gr-id=\"47\">to  find<\/g> out.
