Thursday marks the start of the <\/span>37th annual Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival<\/span><\/a>, a two plus week celebration of cinema from across the globe. This year\u2019s events feature more than 250 films spread across six theaters throughout the Twin Cities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dodging Bullets<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Dodging Bullets <\/span><\/i>examines the contemporary issues affecting the lives of Native people through the lense of intergenerational trauma. Going beyond the history of Native peoples\u2019 first encounters with Europeans, the films highlights the continued racism and disenfranchisement communities continue to face to this day. <\/span><\/p>\n

Hitler\u2019s Hollywood<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Hitler\u2019s Hollywood <\/span><\/i>examines the Third Reich\u2019s infatuation with Hollywood cinema and its deliberate attempts to emulate it. R\u00fcdiger Suchsland\u2019s film looks at the Nazi era\u2019s lasting influence on German film and its impact on today\u2019s work. <\/span><\/p>\n

Indian Horse<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Indian Horse\u2019<\/span><\/i>s titular character is an eight year old Ojibwe-Anishinabe boy who is sent to one of Canada\u2019s Catholic residential schools. Barred from using his language and expressing his culture, Indian Horse finds solace through playing hockey. The film is based on the novel by one of Canada\u2019s most famous indigenous authors, Richard Wagamese.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ohiyesa: The Soul of an Indian<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Ohiyesa <\/span><\/i>is the the story of George Eastman, a renowned lecturer, physician and Native American rights activist. In this film, Eastman\u2019s descendents, including MN alum Kate Beane, document his life and the impressive legacy he leaves today. <\/span><\/p>\n

Risking Light<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

Risking Light <\/span><\/i>is filmmaker Dawn Mikkelson\u2019s in-depth exploration of forgiveness. From Cambodia to Australia, the film examines how people can forgive the seeming unforgivable, including two survivors of Australia\u2019s <\/span>lost generation<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>\n
