The lifeless body of a 16-month old Rohingya boy, Mohammed Shohayet, was found laying face down on the bank of <\/span>River Naf <\/span><\/a>at the Bangladesh-Burma border. Although reminiscent of the photograph of Kurdish-Syrian Alan Kurdi, neither this <\/span>photograph<\/span><\/a> nor the conflict in Burma have received nearly as much attention as the crisis in Syria. Of course, although coverage is important, it has not necessitated action in either conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Rohingya<\/span><\/a> are a Muslim minority group in Burma (<\/span>also known as Myanmar<\/span><\/a>), mainly residing in the Rakhina State. While the conflict in Burma has not yet been declared a genocide, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) compiled a <\/span>report<\/span><\/a> last May on the early warning signs of genocide. The Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide found evidence of a variety of key warning signs, including physical segregation of the population, restrictions on both marriages and births, constraints on movement, and physical violence. And since the release of this report, additional and increasing troubling information has continued to flow from the nation, <\/span>with the most recent report<\/a> by the United Nations documenting crimes against humanity.\u00a0Media organizations have had limited access to the Rakhine state as the government continues its propaganda campaign, but recently <\/span>leaked footage<\/span><\/a> captured police officers attacking a group of Rohingya men. The government later arrested the officers and stated that the beating was an isolated incident, while claiming similar footage from the previous month was faked. As a result of the conflict, tens of thousands of Rohingya are displaced and have tried fleeing to neighboring countries on boats, only to be rejected.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps what is most ironic, is that the current president of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, is a nobel peace prize laureate and a champion for democracy. However, she has repeatedly referred to the Rohingya as \u2018Bengalis\u2019 alluding to their foreignness, despite their long and rich history living in Burma, which dates back to ancient times. The leader sparked heightened criticism last December in Singapore when she called the claims of genocide \u201cfabrication\u201d and <\/span>openly laughed<\/span><\/a> at the allegations. A group of <\/span>fellow prize winners<\/span><\/a> recently condemned the violence.<\/span><\/p>\n

The persecution of the Rohingya is yet another crisis visibly unfolding while the world stands by. Far too often, intervention and outcry come from the international community when a crisis has escalated, while the early stages of conflict often provide more opportunity for political or economic intervention. However, months after the USHMM\u2019s report was released, Burma <\/span>still tops their list <\/span><\/a>of nations at-risk for genocide.<\/span><\/p>\n
