{"id":7401,"date":"2014-06-19T10:23:33","date_gmt":"2014-06-19T15:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/girlwpen\/?p=7401"},"modified":"2014-06-19T10:23:33","modified_gmt":"2014-06-19T15:23:33","slug":"unions-a-way-for-feminism-to-overcome-its-class-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/girlwpen\/2014\/06\/19\/unions-a-way-for-feminism-to-overcome-its-class-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Unions: A Way for Feminism to Overcome Its \u201cClass Problem\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Welcome to guest poster <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/index.php\/experts\/clips\/nicole-woo-blog-posts\">Nicole Woo<\/a><em>, director of domestic policy at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, discussing their new study\u00a0 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/documents\/women-union-2014-06.pdf\">Women, Working Families, and Unions<\/a>.&#8221; <em><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-top: 15px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/images\/staff\/thumbnails\/nicole_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"alt\" \/><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Nation<\/em> sparked a robust discussion last week with its incisive online conversation, <a href=\"http:\/\/web2.thenation.fayze2.com\/blog\/180031\/does-feminism-have-class-problem\">Does Feminism Have a Class Problem?<\/a>, featuring moderator Kathleen Geier, Demos\u2019 Heather McGhee, the Center for American Progress\u2019 Judith Warner, and economist Nancy Folbre.<\/p>\n<p>They addressed the \u201cLean In\u201d phenomenon, articulating how and why Sheryl Sandberg\u2019s focus on self-improvement \u2013 rather than structural barriers and collective action to overcome them \u2013 angered quite a few feminists on the left.<\/p>\n<p>While women of different economic backgrounds face many different realities, they also share similar work-life balance struggles. In that vein, the discussants argue that expanding family-friendly workplace policies \u2013 which would improve the lives of working women up and down the economic ladder \u2013 could help bridge the feminist class divide.<\/p>\n<p>A growing body of research indicates that there are few other interventions that improve the economic prospects and work-life balance of women workers as much as unions do. <a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/cAmNsS\">A new report<\/a> from the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), which I co-authored with my colleagues <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/index.php\/experts\/clips\/janelle-jones-blog-posts\">Janelle Jones<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/index.php\/biographies\/john-schmitt\/\">John Schmitt<\/a>, shows just how much of a boost unions give to working women&#8217;s pay, benefits and workplace flexibility. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/minnesotahistoricalsociety\/5489177640\/in\/photolist-9n4tgN-hhGtax-e3gurs-e3gymj-e3gudy-e3aTbB-e3guzd-e3aMPP-e3aPhe-e3gySL-e26RBp-5KFmCy-5KFmSQ-5KFmKE-5KFmP7-5KFmEb-5KB7MF-5KFmQY-5KFmHC-5KFmM5-8w9t4v-6Ev7Lg-6EviMB-6EyJNo-6Ev7Lv-6EyJMY-6Ev7LF-6EyJPo-6EyJNS-6EyJPh-6Ev7Kk-6EviMg-6Ev7Kz-6EyJP5-5uQp81-93ya7h-ZVhnu-e2cwRo-6EviNx-6EviNF-6EviMT-9thHtY-9teKU6-6LJPs9-6LEExV-6LEEE2-6LJPfb-6LJPqw-6LEEqD-6LJP6u\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-7402\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/girlwpen\/files\/2014\/06\/gwpwomansplace.jpg\" alt=\"Photo Credit:Minnesota Historical Society\" width=\"240\" height=\"237\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For example, all else being equal, women in unions earn an average of 13 percent \u2013 that\u2019s about $2.50 per hour \u2013 more than their non-union counterparts. In other words, unionization can raise a woman&#8217;s pay as much as a full year of college does. Unions also help move us closer to equal pay: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwlc.org\/our-blog\/gender-wage-gap-union-members-half-size-non-union-workers-wage-gap\">a study<\/a> by the National Women&#8217;s Law Center determined that the gender pay gap for union workers is only half of what it is for those not in unions.<\/p>\n<p>Unionized careers tend to come with better health and retirement benefits, too. CEPR finds that women in unions are 36 percent more likely to have health insurance through their jobs \u2013 and a whopping 53 percent more likely to participate in an employer-sponsored retirement plan.<\/p>\n<p>Unions also support working women at those crucial times when they need time off to care for themselves or their families. Union workplaces are 16 percent more likely to allow medical leave and 21 percent more likely to offer paid sick leave. Companies with unionized employees are also 22 percent more likely to allow parental leave, 12 percent more likely to offer pregnancy leave, and 19 percent more likely to let their workers take time off to care for sick family members.<\/p>\n<p>Women make up almost half of the union workforce and are on track to be in the majority by 2025. As women are overrepresented in the low-wage jobs that are being created in this precarious economy \u2013 they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/index.php\/blogs\/cepr-blog\/low-wage-workers-smarter-older-and-underpaid\">56.4% of low-wage workers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cepr.net\/index.php\/blogs\/cepr-blog\/slow-progress-for-fast-food-workers\">over half of fast food workers<\/a> \u2013 unions are leading and supporting many of the campaigns to improve their situations. In an important sense, the union movement already is a women\u2019s movement.<\/p>\n<p>Education and skills can get women only so far. It&#8217;s a conundrum that women have surpassed men when it comes to formal schooling, yet women have made little progress catching up on pay.
