And speaking of, this week<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia\"> marks the 113th anniversary \u00e2\u20ac\u201d (&#8220;centennial + bat mitzvah!&#8221;) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d of the launch issue of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/a\/amjewess\/\"><i>The American Jewess<\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-family:georgia\">, the first English-language publication directed to American Jewish women.  Writes Rebecca Honig Friedman with backup from the Jewish Women&#8217;s Archive Staff:<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin: 0px;font-family:arial\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"> Published between April 1895 and August 1899, the magazine covered an evocative range of topics, from demands for synagogue membership for women, to Zionism, to health and fashion tips, to the propriety of women riding bicycles.<\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\">The phrase \u00e2\u20ac\u0153American Jewess,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in the 1890s, described a new type of Jewish woman \u00e2\u20ac\u201d one who could fully embrace the possibilities of both the religious and national aspects of her identity. <\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"><i>The American Jewess<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\">  set out to explore the challenges and possibilities inherent in this new identity, proclaiming that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153never before, in the history of Judaism have its women more energetically devoted themselves to reviving the noblest elements of their ancestral faith.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Thanks to the <\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jwa.org\/\">Jewish Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Archive<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\">\u00e2\u20ac\u201din partnership with Hebrew Union College, Brandeis University Libraries, and the Library of Congress\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthe <\/span><span style=\"font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"><a href=\"http:\/\/quod.lib.umich.edu\/a\/amjewess\/\">archives of The American Jewess<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic;font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\"> are available online \u00e2\u20ac\u201d in search-able, browse-able form.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:georgia;font-size:100%\">Tres cool.<\/span><span style=\"font-style: italic\"><br \/><\/span> <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week was Jewesses Who Rock (literally) Week on Jewess Blog.
