Check out\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderremixer.com\/lego\/#\">The HTML5 Gendered LEGO Advertising Remixer<\/a>\u00a0to try it out for yourself and your kids.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/2\/24\/LEGO_logo.svg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"margin: 8px\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/2\/24\/LEGO_logo.svg\/300px-LEGO_logo.svg.png\" alt=\"File:LEGO logo.svg\" width=\"108\" height=\"108\" \/><\/a>\u00a0In the words of my almost-8-year-old daughter trying to explain\u00a0(to her\u00a0feminist sociologist mom) why this website cracks her up:<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This is funny!&#8221; (&#8220;Why?&#8221;) &#8220;Because it has the gun sounds and the girl characters.&#8221; (&#8220;Why do you\u00a0think LEGO makes their toys like this?&#8221;) &#8220;Because they think that there are boy-toys and girl-toys.&#8221; (&#8220;Are there?&#8221;) &#8220;No, but they think they are.\u00a0 And,\u00a0look at the colors.&#8221; (&#8220;The colors are different?&#8221;) &#8220;People think orange is a boy color and pink is a girl color. But, I like orange, and Dad likes pink.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yep, Dad likes pink.\u00a0 And,\u00a0Mom likes interactive ways to show, rather than tell, why anti-sexist parents must continue to fight the good fight&#8230;whether with a light saber or a blow dryer.<\/p>\n<p>*I recognize &#8220;boyie-boy&#8221; is not as common an expression as &#8220;girlie-girl,&#8221; but my daughter used that term last year when\u00a0describing the gendered differences she noticed among\u00a0her friends:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some of my girl friends\u00a0are <em>girlie-girls<\/em>, and they\u00a0like pink and purple and sparkles and dresses and unicorns. And, some boys at my school are\u00a0<em>boyie-boys<\/em>, and they only like\u00a0orange and blue and red and bugs and LEGOs and dinosaurs.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My daughter\u00a0self-identifies as a <em>boyie-girl <\/em>(a girl who likes <em>girlie<\/em> and <em>boyie<\/em> things), and she and I\u00a0both appreciate the <em>girlie-boys\u00a0<\/em>in our lives\u00a0&#8212; guys who are as happy wearing a lavendar shirt while they cook dinner as they are drinking a beer while\u00a0watching the big game\u00a0\u00a0:-] <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why is it strange to see a visual of girlie-girls grooming puppies while\u00a0hearing the sounds of boyie-boys* describing\u00a0a Star Wars battle?
