{"id":2135,"date":"2011-02-09T12:58:24","date_gmt":"2011-02-09T17:58:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/girlwpen.com\/?p=2135"},"modified":"2011-02-09T12:58:24","modified_gmt":"2011-02-09T17:58:24","slug":"gwpenners-discuss-betty-friedan-stephanie-coontz-and-feminism-unfinished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/girlwpen\/2011\/02\/09\/gwpenners-discuss-betty-friedan-stephanie-coontz-and-feminism-unfinished\/","title":{"rendered":"GWPenners Discuss: Betty Friedan, Stephanie Coontz, Feminism Unfinished and Demystified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.podiumsource.com\/mmPARKPODIUMSOURCE\/Images\/BC336-1163.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"118\" height=\"240\" \/>This past week you might have noticed something different around here.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a guest post from Andrea Doucet (author of<em> Do Men Mother?<\/em> and a forthcoming book tentatively titled <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.breadandrosesproject.ca\/\">The Bread and Roses Project: Breadwinning Moms and the New &#8216;Problem with No Name&#8217;<\/a><em>) <\/em><\/em>about <a href=\"http:\/\/girlwpen.com\/?p=2071\">whether dads are facing discrimination on the playgrounds<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/girlwpen.com\/?p=2126\">a well-earned celebratory announcement <\/a>from Veronica Arreola (go SCIENCE GRRL!), a number of regular GWP writers devoted our monthly columns to various aspects of historian Stephanie Coontz\u2018s new book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Strange-Stirring-Feminine-Mystique-American\/dp\/0465002005\">A Strange Stirring: The Feminine Mystique and American Women at the Dawn of the 1960s<\/a><\/em>.\u00a0 Coontz&#8217;s book is a biography of Betty Friedan\u2019s iconic book.\u00a0 A forum about book about a book?\u00a0 Sounds rather&#8230;discursive.\u00a0 So why did we do it?<\/p>\n<p>As &#8220;crossover&#8221; scholar type peeps, we think the way conversations about feminism play out in public, in this case the cultural conversation about a second-wave feminist text, are important to track.\u00a0 As a generation, we&#8217;re indebted to Betty Friedan for her classic.\u00a0 And we&#8217;re\u00a0 indebted to Stephanie Coontz for reviving a conversation about the   journey this book helped launch&#8211;not only for women at the dawn of the   1960s, but for those of us striving for egalitarian marriages and  humane  workplaces and raising our children here in 2011.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s a recap:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To kick it off, Virgina Rutter (NICE WORK) asked two dear friends, one born in 1935, the other born in 1940, to <a href=\"http:\/\/girlwpen.com\/?p=2044\">tell her their experiences around the publication of Friedan\u2019s TFM in 1963<\/a>.  The kicker: they&#8217;re both men.<\/p>\n<p>Fueled by Coontz&#8217;s analysis, we cleared up some myths about TFM and encouraged readers to <a href=\"..\/?p=2065\">Test Your Feminine Mystique Cliche Quotient.<\/a> In a <a href=\"..\/?p=2083\">Review of \u2018Stirring\u2019 Reviews<\/a>, we offered a reading of the initial reviews of Coontz&#8217;s book appearing in in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, and The New York Times, Salon, Ms., Bitch, and feministing.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie Wilson (POP GOES FEMINISM) asked whether &#8220;Housewives&#8221; today are just as &#8220;Desperate&#8221; as in the era documented by Friedan and offers up pop-culture infused <a href=\"..\/?p=2093\">Thoughts on Coontz\u2019s A Strange Stirring.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, Deborah Siegel (MAMA W\/PEN) waxed intergenerational and mused on <a href=\"..\/?p=2110\">How the Choices of Our Generation Are Shaped By the Last.<\/a> (Your comments on that one are giving me&#8211;it&#8217;s Deborah here&#8211;tons of food for thought&#8230;!)<\/p>\n<p>We hope you find the discussion of interest.\u00a0 We&#8217;d love your feedback.\u00a0 And if you&#8217;d like to see more of this kind of group forum, or would like to propose one yourself for the future, please do let us know!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past week you might have noticed something different around here.
