Writes<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/observing-national-parents-day-by-enabling-all-families-to-thrive\"> Linda Basch in the introductory post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Last Sunday marked the 15th annual observance of National Parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Day, a holiday established to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153uplift ideal parental role models.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Originally introduced into Congress by Senator Trent Lott, in 1994, then-President Bill Clinton formally established the fourth Sunday of July as National Parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Day. Generally, this holiday is used to promote the image of two-parent, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153traditional\u00e2\u20ac\u009d families.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We at the Council, however, find this model to be limited and out-of-touch with reality and we want to reclaim National Parents\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Day by celebrating the diversity of families we have today in the United States and recognizing the urgency of building stronger safety nets for all families.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Contributions include:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/national-parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-day-forum-don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t-forget-about-non-custodial-parents\">Rebecca Spicuglia (of recent TODAY SHOW fame!) on non-custodial parents<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/national-parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-day-forum-finding-your-familial-truth-in-the-lgbtq-families-movement\">Amanda Harris on LGBTQ families<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/national-parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-day-forum-lessons-from-a-jewish-feminist-famil\">Julie Zellinger (of the FBomb) on lessons from a Jewish feminist family<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/national-parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-day-forum-recognizing-caregivers\">Amy Sueyoshi on receognizing caregivers<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/national-parent%e2%80%99s-day-forum-the-alternatives-to-marriage-project-asks-are-%e2%80%9ctraditional%e2%80%9d-families-a-myth\">The Alternatives to Marriage Project on traditional families as a myth<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And, yes, also moi, on my seemingly favorite topic these days, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncrw.org\/ncrwbigfive\/national-parent\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s-day-forum-pregnant-in-a-recession\">pregnant in a recession<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Check out the National Council for Research on Women&#8217;s latest forum.
