{"id":1217,"date":"2008-10-10T08:25:22","date_gmt":"2008-10-10T13:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/girlwpen.com\/?p=1217"},"modified":"2008-10-10T08:25:22","modified_gmt":"2008-10-10T13:25:22","slug":"xy-files-presidential-masculinity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/girlwpen\/2008\/10\/10\/xy-files-presidential-masculinity\/","title":{"rendered":"XY FILES: Presidential Masculinity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the excitment of our launch here this week, I&#8211;oops!&#8211;forgot to post my own column, XY FILES (myths and facts about a new generation of men).\u00c2\u00a0 So here we go&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Remember all that stereotyped talk during the primaries about how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bostonglobe\/editorial_opinion\/oped\/articles\/2008\/02\/22\/the_female_style___modeled_by_a_man\/\">Barack leads like a woman<\/a> (meaning, collaboratively) and Hillary leads like a man (meaning, I suppose, pantsuits)?\u00c2\u00a0 In a <em>Boston Globe <\/em>column last Feburary, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/bostonglobe\/editorial_opinion\/oped\/articles\/2008\/02\/22\/the_female_style___modeled_by_a_man\/\">Ellen Goodman described Barack<\/a> as &#8220;the quality circle man, the uniter-not-divider, the person who believes we can talk to anyone, even our enemies.&#8221; He finely honed a language &#8220;usually associated with women&#8217;s voices,&#8221; she said.\u00c2\u00a0 Goodman quoted political science professor Kathleen Dolan, who saw Obama as &#8220;the embodiment of the gentle, collaborative style without threatening his masculine side.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well now that it&#8217;s Obama vs. McCain, the gender of leadership has become, well, a little homogenized.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s dude v. dude.\u00c2\u00a0 Again.\u00c2\u00a0 And one of my newfound heroes<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacksonkatz.com\/\"> Jackson Katz<\/a> (educator, author, filmmaker, bigtime FOF &#8212; that&#8217;s friend of feminism, mind you) is currently working on a book about \u00e2\u20ac\u0153presidential masculinity\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 that I can&#8217;t wait to read.<\/p>\n<p>According to an article in <em>UCSF Today,<\/em> Katz says this election is nothing new when it comes to the important role that race and gender have historically played in campaigns for the White House.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 While the level of diversity among this year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s crop of candidates is of course unprecedented, Katz suggests that the battle between the two presidential contenders still boils down to a question of who best represents the stereotypically masculine qualities of a leader: strength, steadfastness and vitality.<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This year, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still about masculinity,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he says. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just white masculinity versus person-of-color masculinity.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Or is it?\u00c2\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t the Hillary\/Sarah effect (ew &#8211; I hate putting them so close together like that) still having an impact on the way we talk about leadership&#8217;s gender these days?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 GWP readers <a href=\"http:\/\/girlwithpen.blogspot.com\/2008\/02\/is-obama-leading-like-woman.html\">J.K.
