My <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2011\/12\/14\/we-are-the-1-in-100\/\">pubcrim<\/a> colleague Michelle Inderbitzin seems to do this every year in her classes at both Oregon State University and Oregon State Penitentiary.<\/p>\n<p>This fall, her Inside-Out Prison Exchange students\u00a0combined a social fact (that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/02\/28\/us\/28cnd-prison.html\">1 of every 100<\/a> American adults is incarcerated) with a new social movement (the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/12\/01\/us\/we-are-the-99-percent-joins-the-cultural-and-political-lexicon.html\">We are the 99 Percent<\/a> cry of the Occupy movement)\u00a0,\u00a0photographing prisoners and the people around them holding signs that shared their stories. The result is <a href=\"http:\/\/iam1in100.tumblr.com\/\">We are the 1 in 100<\/a>, a class project and tumblr site that\u00a0shows an important side of the American incarceration story.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/2011\/12\/14\/teaching-the-1-in-100\/robbery1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-572\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-572 alignleft\" title=\"robbery1\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/files\/2011\/12\/robbery1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0As a professor who\u00a0works and teaches\u00a0in this area, I rarely come across materials that\u00a0render the lived everyday reality of prisons in such a\u00a0clear, human, and intimate way. You can read <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/pubcrim\/2011\/12\/14\/we-are-the-1-in-100\/\">Michelle&#8217;s account<\/a> on pubcrim or <a href=\"http:\/\/iam1in100.tumblr.com\/\">visit<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/iam1in100.tumblr.com\/submit\">add<\/a>\u00a0to the archive with your own photos and stories.
