{"id":503,"date":"2011-12-03T19:44:20","date_gmt":"2011-12-04T00:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/?p=503"},"modified":"2011-12-28T12:46:48","modified_gmt":"2011-12-28T17:46:48","slug":"what-manner-of-bacchanalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/2011\/12\/03\/what-manner-of-bacchanalia\/","title":{"rendered":"What Manner of Bacchanalia?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-503 gallery-columns-2 gallery-size-thumbnail'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/files\/2011\/12\/tsp_launch2.jpg' title=\"\" data-rl_title=\"\" class=\"rl-gallery-link\" data-rl_caption=\"\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/files\/2011\/12\/tsp_launch2-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/files\/2011\/12\/tsp_launch1.jpg' title=\"\" data-rl_title=\"\" class=\"rl-gallery-link\" data-rl_caption=\"\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/editors\/files\/2011\/12\/tsp_launch1-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Because\u00a0our department\u00a0always\u00a0seems to be celebrating\u00a0<em>something, <\/em>Dean Jim Parente\u00a0often asks, &#8220;What manner of Bacchanalia goes on in Sociology this week?&#8221;\u00a0Well, it wasn&#8217;t exactly bacchanalia (that&#8217;s Izze&#8217;s <em>sparkling clementine juice, <\/em>I&#8217;ll have you know), but the denizens of the society pages\u00a0enjoyed a\u00a0fine party Wednesday at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wingyounghuie.com\/\">Wing Young Huie&#8217;s<\/a> supercool gallery, The Third Place.\u00a0 It was the perfect space and moment to thank our friends,\u00a0commemorate our\u00a0final Minnesota\u00a0issue of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/contexts.org\">Contexts<\/a> <\/em>magazine, and\u00a0to begin turning the\u00a0(society) page.<\/p>\n<p>We were honored to feature a\u00a0sampling\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/contexts.org\/articles\/fall-2011\/up-close-and-communal\/\">Wing&#8217;s\u00a0photographs<\/a> in\u00a0our final\u00a0issue,\u00a0which\u00a0nicely punctuates\u00a0a line\u00a0tracing the\u00a0sociological imagination of great artists, social entrepreneurs, and cultural observers &#8212; Sebasti\u00e3o Salgado\u2019s photography; the art of Anne Taintor and Harvey Pekar; and, the wit and wisdom of rock critic Chuck Klosterman, humorist Dylan Brody, and magazine entrepreneur Eric Utne. Editing <em>Contexts <\/em>was always intellectually stimulating, but\u00a0it was positively thrilling to\u00a0engage such work with the sociological enterprise.<\/p>\n<p>As for the party, we had\u00a0a great turnout,\u00a0tons of fun, and a fitting tribute to a project that\u00a0brought together\u00a0so many\u00a0good people\u00a0in so many\u00a0capacities\u00a0the past few years.* Doug, Letta, and I feel humbled\u00a0and grateful\u00a0to have worked with\u00a0so many\u00a0brilliant contributors\u00a0and colleagues at <em>Contexts, <\/em>the American Sociological Association, and around the world. We only wish we had the budget to\u00a0fly\u00a0you\u00a0to beautiful Minnesota\u00a0for an enjoyably brisk winter&#8217;s night.\u00a0As\u00a0you can probably guess, though, it won&#8217;t be too long <em>at all<\/em> before we&#8217;ll have another big announcement, celebration, and (yes) some measure of bacchanalia\u00a0to share\u00a0with the new TSP crew.
