On-deck as\u00a0the next speaker in the series, Professor\u00a0Jacobs has taught me a great deal about\u00a0public scholarship.\u00a0He&#8217;s\u00a0in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/ben-railton\/progressive-populism-the_b_9587522.html\">news<\/a>\u00a0these days for <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/fed-power-9780199388967?lang=en&amp;cc=us||||||||jectcode1=1136862||\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fed Power: How Finance Wins<\/a>\u00a0(with Desmond King),\u00a0but he&#8217;s written powerfully and well on numerous hot-button topics\u00a0as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/health-care-reform-and-american-politics-9780190262044?q=Lawrence%20Jacobs&amp;lang=en&amp;cc=us\">health care reform<\/a> (with Theda Skocpol), public deliberation, democratic responsiveness, and US\u00a0foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p>There are <em>infinite<\/em>\u00a0ways to be a\u00a0public scholar, but Larry Jacobs&#8217; example is instructive. How did he become\u00a0such a welcome and trusted voice? Well&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(1)\u00a0He\u00a0is active and effective in engaging\u00a0<em>local<\/em> as well as national and international audiences.<\/p>\n<p>(2)\u00a0Although he clearly\u00a0<em>has\u00a0<\/em>political views, Larry takes pains to offer\u00a0a fair-minded perspective.<\/p>\n<p>(3)\u00a0Similarly,\u00a0as a center director and leader of our local\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scholarsstrategynetwork.org\/\">Scholars Strategy Network<\/a> chapter, he invites speakers who don&#8217;t always agree with him (or with our faculty, or University administration, or each other).<\/p>\n<p>(4)\u00a0He is a prolific and respected national academic expert in particular\u00a0specialties, but he has also developed the\u00a0command and authority to speak to a broad set of public concerns.<\/p>\n<p>(5) After cataloging these attributes, it almost seems redundant to note\u00a0his boundless energy and willingness to make himself available\u00a0on short notice.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to the latter point, his advice for me was something of a paradox.\u00a0When I asked how I could improve in on-camera interviews, he just said, &#8220;slow down, don&#8217;t rush, and have a nice conversation.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After wrapping up\u00a0a public talk Thursday night, I was delighted\u00a0to see political scientist\u00a0Larry Jacobs smiling down\u00a0from the screen above.
