At the same time, the number of terms describing people\u2019s sexualities and gender identities has increased as well, <a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu\/educated\/glossary\">and continues to evolve<\/a>. Given these changes, how do LGBTQ+ people decide which labels to use when describing or disclosing their identities?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/23780231241306466\">a new study<\/a>, researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aholmes.ca\/\">Holmes <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aminghaziani.net\/\">Ghaziani <\/a>sought to understand how LGBTQ+ people make sense of the different identity labels available to them. Through interviews with LGBTQ+ adults around Vancouver (most of whom were in their 20s), the researchers found most respondents used more than one label to define their sexuality. Most commonly, these respondents described themselves as both \u201cqueer\u201d and either \u201cgay\u201d, \u201cbisexual\u201d, or \u201cpansexual\u201d. Some respondents used a series of labels to define their identity, offering descriptions like \u201cnonbinary, queer, bisexual, gray-sexual, and aromantic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><div class=\"pull-this-show\" id=\"pull-this-show-12111-ex2\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/div>Additionally, some LGBTQ+ people in this study reported using different identity labels in different situations to avoid potential confusion or conflict. For example, some people would use better-known terms &#8211; such as \u201cgay\u201d, \u201clesbian\u201d, or \u201cbisexual\u201d &#8211; when communicating their identities to older or more conservative people. As one respondent described, \u201cI pretty much just stick to \u2018queer\u2019 [in Vancouver], but when I\u2019m in Texas, my dad is &#8211; he doesn\u2019t understand, really, so for him, it\u2019s \u2018gay\u2019.\u201d<span class=\"pull-this-mark\" id=\"pull-this-mark-12111-ex2\" style=\"display:none;\">\u201cI pretty much just stick to \u2018queer\u2019 [in Vancouver], but when I\u2019m in Texas, my dad is &#8211; he doesn\u2019t understand, really, so for him, it\u2019s \u2018gay\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some respondents also discussed using different labels in interactions with other LGBTQ+ people to avoid potential in-fighting over the legitimacy of their identity. As one person described, \u201cI will use gay, queer, or bisexual depending on who I\u2019m speaking to\u2026When I\u2019m speaking to someone like a lesbian or someone in the queer community, I\u2019ll call myself queer, because I still have that fear that I\u2019m seen as less gay or less deserving of being in that space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings highlight that how people express their identities often varies across situations. To try to help interactions run smoothly, LGBTQ+ people discussed adjusting the identity labels they used based on their audience.
