Image via pixabay, <a href=\"https:\/\/pixabay.com\/service\/license\/\">pixabay license.<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For many Christian Americans, discussions of structural racism amount to attacks on America &#8211; and its Christian heritage &#8211; itself.&nbsp;Using survey data collected during the early months of the pandemic and through the summer of \u201cracial reckoning&#8221; in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ou.edu\/cas\/soc\/people\/faculty\/samuel-perry\">Samuel Perry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sociology.uga.edu\/directory\/people\/ryon-j-cobb-phd\">Ryon Cobb<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/raac.iupui.edu\/about\/who-we-are\/our-staff\/andrew-l-whitehead\/\">Andrew Whitehead<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgsu.edu\/arts-and-sciences\/psychology\/people\/joshua-grubs.html\">Joshua Grubbs<\/a> show how \u201cWhite Christian nationalism\u201d contributes to what they call a \u201cperception gap\u201d on racial issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perry and colleagues measure Americans\u2019 attitudes on racial discrimination using four sets of survey data from 2019-2020. They also assess respondents\u2019 approval of Christian nationalism, an ideology that fuses Christianity and American civic life. Champions of Christian nationalism seek to define America as a divinely-inspired Christian nation and advocate enshrining Christianity and \u201cJudeo-Christian heritage\u201d in school curricula, in the public sphere, and in government.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><div class=\"pull-this-show\" id=\"pull-this-show-11068-ex1\" style=\"display:none;\"><\/div>The authors find that White proponents of Christian nationalism tend to minimize anti-Black discrimination and deny the presence of systemic racism in policing. The surveys &#8211; designed to capture shifting opinions during the developments of 2020 &#8211; revealed that supporters of Christian nationalism were more likely to believe that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/ahmaud-arbery-shooting-georgia.html\"> the men who murdered Ahmaud Arbery<\/a> were \u201cnot necessarily racist\u201d and acted within their right as vigilantes. <span class=\"pull-this-mark\" id=\"pull-this-mark-11068-ex1\" style=\"display:none;\">White proponents of Christian nationalism tend to minimize anti-Black discrimination and deny the presence of systemic racism<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike whites who accept Christian nationalism, Black respondents recognize who affirmed the ideology did so while recognizing racial discrimination against Black Americans.
