The developments that unfold each day in communications and computing can be thrilling and disorienting. One understandable reaction is to wonder: Are these changes good or bad? Should we welcome or fear them? The answer is both.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/newdean\/2013\/12\/05\/technorealism\/\" target=\"_blank\">My technorealism post<\/a> popped into mind today while reading an online article by the chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/polisci\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Political Science<\/a>\u00a0department here at SJSU, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/our-love-of-technology-risks-becoming-a-quiet-conspiracy-against-ourselves-43428\" target=\"_blank\">Our love of technology risks becoming a quiet conspiracy against ourselves<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0Lawrence Quill wonders &#8220;why so many people outside the charmed circle of technology innovators in Silicon Valley seem willing to embrace its vision \u2013 especially when it undermines something as fundamental as the liberal democratic right to personal privacy,&#8221; and muses about how elements of the dystopian vision in Dave Eggers&#8217; book <em>The Circl<\/em>e are viewed as inevitable by some current politicians. We need to have a more critical engagement with technology innovation.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Circle<\/em> is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/reading\/\" target=\"_blank\">2015 common reading selection at SJSU<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/reading\/events_discussions\/\" target=\"_blank\">activities<\/a> include talks by faculty members in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/psych\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Psychology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjsu.edu\/comm\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Communication Studies<\/a>.
