{"id":3287,"date":"2011-06-18T16:56:57","date_gmt":"2011-06-18T20:56:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/?p=3287"},"modified":"2011-06-18T17:33:01","modified_gmt":"2011-06-18T21:33:01","slug":"obama-tweet-authorship-signals-web-2-0-campaign-in-2012","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/2011\/06\/18\/obama-tweet-authorship-signals-web-2-0-campaign-in-2012\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama Tweet Authorship Signals Web 2.0 Campaign in 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/technology\/2011\/05\/president-obama-could-send-text-message-warnings-in-new-plan-system.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" src=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/.a\/6a00d8341c630a53ef015432391706970c-600wi\" alt=\"Obama Texting\" width=\"450\" height=\"327\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Credit: Charles Ommanney\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On June 17th, an Obama 2012 campaign staffer made a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/news\/a-new-approach-to-facebook-and-twitter-2\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> explaining that Obama&#8217;s Twitter and Facebook presence would be handled differently going forward.\u00a0 As fellow Cyborgology editor <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/author\/nathanjurgenson\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Jurgenson<\/a> recently <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/2011\/04\/20\/who-will-be-the-first-facebook-president\/\" target=\"_blank\">discussed<\/a>, Obama&#8217;s posts and updates have, up until now, been ghostwritten\u2014leading Jurgenson to conclude that &#8220;Obama-as-president has thus far been a Web 1.0 leader&#8221; and, thus, to ask &#8220;when will we see a Web 2.0, social media president?&#8221;\u00a0 Obama&#8217;s use of social media has been in sharp contrast to other nationally-recognized politicians, including former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, whose tweets appear to be individually-authored, spontaneous, and personal, making them appear more authentic and more consistent with the norms of other Twitter users (spelling errors and all).\u00a0 The president is now getting into the game by authoring his own tweets.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign update, titled, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barackobama.com\/news\/a-new-approach-to-facebook-and-twitter-2\" target=\"_blank\">A New Approach to Facebook and Twitter<\/a>,&#8221;\u00a0 states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Obama for America staff will now be managing both accounts, posting  daily updates from the campaign trail, from Washington, and everywhere  in between. You&#8217;ll be hearing from President Obama regularly, too; on  Twitter, tweets from the President will be signed &#8220;-BO.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThe official <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/BarackObama\" target=\"_blank\">@BarackObama<\/a> Twitter account also posted a tweet that read:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2011\/06\/Untitled-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3298\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2011\/06\/Untitled-2.jpg\" alt=\"Welcome to a new @BarackObama. From now on, #Obama2012 staff will manage this account; tweets from the President will be signed &quot;-BO.&quot;\" width=\"518\" height=\"106\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2011\/06\/Untitled-2.jpg 518w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2011\/06\/Untitled-2-300x61.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 518px) 100vw, 518px\" \/><\/a>This strategy of using a signature to distinguish the origin of tweets (i.e., those from staffers and those from the president himself) demonstrates a compromise between the need for consistent messaging and the burgeoning need for authenticity in communication.\u00a0 Yesterday&#8217;s announcement acknowledges that <em>effective <\/em>use of social media (i.e., user-generated content), unsurprisingly, requires generation of content by the user.\u00a0 That is to say, a significant aspect of social media&#8217;s appeal (compared to conventional top-down media) is that it offers (at least the perception of) more direct connection to the thoughts and activities of public figures and, even, the potential for some degree of interaction.\u00a0 Social media users delight in the raw tidbits that are generally edited out of more polished news sources.\u00a0 For politicians, social media has the potential to improve a candidate&#8217;s populist cred by helping to diminish the sense of social distant\u2014the perception that &#8220;we, the enlightened leaders, haven&#8217;t the time for you, the little people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I believe we are now seeing an answer to Jurgenson&#8217;s question emerge: <strong>We will see a social media president when the current, first-term president is required to occupy the dual roles of president <em>and<\/em> candidate.<\/strong> It is becoming clear that the president will increasingly come to accept the inconvenience, the possible embarrassment, and the potential de-legitimizing effects of social media with respect to executive authority in order to harness social media as an effective campaign tool.\u00a0 A campaign fought in the silicon trenches will require a transformation (or &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/2011\/02\/24\/digital-dualism-versus-augmented-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\">augmentation<\/a>&#8220;) of the presidency itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On June 17th, an Obama 2012 campaign staffer made a post explaining that Obama&#8217;s Twitter and Facebook presence would be handled differently going forward.\u00a0 As fellow Cyborgology editor Nathan Jurgenson recently discussed, Obama&#8217;s posts and updates have, up until now, been ghostwritten\u2014leading Jurgenson to conclude that &#8220;Obama-as-president has thus far been a Web 1.0 leader&#8221;
