Erikson<\/a> says that boundaries are made and reinforced on the public scaffold. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ray_Rice\">Ray and Janay rice case<\/a>, Twitter is that public scaffold.<\/p>\n<p>To briefly recap, Ray Rice is a (now former) NFL football player for the Baltimore Ravens. He was originally suspended for two games after part of a video surfaced of his abusive behavior towards his then fianc\u00e9, Janay. His suspension from the NFL was made indefinite following TMZ&#8217;s\u00a0release of the entire video[i] in which he punches Janay, and then drags her unconscious body out of a hotel elevator. Though Ray was punished by the NFL, Janay maintained their relationship, marrying him and then releasing a statement in Ray\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19101\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-304x400.jpg\" alt=\"Rice\" width=\"304\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-304x400.jpg 304w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-190x250.jpg 190w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-380x500.jpg 380w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice.jpg 470w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While the public outrage over Ray Rice makes him an object of boundary reinforcement\u2014\u201cviolence against women is wrong\u201d\u2014Janay Rice is the object of a boundary war.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Though apologists have a presence\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoreravens.com\/news\/article-1\/Ravens-Fans-Give-Ray-Rice-Standing-Ovation\/44158257-9ef8-47af-8bc0-bed9f3de99f1\">this was especially true in the beginning<\/a>\u2014Ray Rice has largely been the object of public derision.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Ricerice.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19096\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Ricerice-400x181.png\" alt=\"Ricerice\" width=\"400\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Ricerice-400x181.png 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Ricerice-250x113.png 250w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Ricerice.png 452w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As have those who <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=takethestairs&amp;src=typd\">failed to take his offense seriously enough<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19097\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice11-400x188.png\" alt=\"Rice1\" width=\"400\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice11-400x188.png 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice11-250x117.png 250w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice11-500x235.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice11.png 577w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reaction to Janay, \u00a0however, has been far more contentious, as some arduously defend and support her, while others cast her as weak, stupid, and morally culpable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19098\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay1-400x129.png\" alt=\"Rice Janay1\" width=\"400\" height=\"129\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay1-400x129.png 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay1-250x81.png 250w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay1-500x162.png 500w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay1.png 573w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-19099\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay-400x155.png\" alt=\"Rice Janay\" width=\"400\" height=\"155\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay-400x155.png 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay-250x97.png 250w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/Rice-Janay.png 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That is, Janay has become the site of a moral boundary war upon which the moral tenor of Women Who Stay is at stake. The trouble with this boundary war, as fought through Twitter, is that each side, the moral crusaders and moral defenders, cast Janay\u2014as an agentic and empowered subject\u2014aside. That is, they turn Janay into \u00a0an object through which they exemplify a moral claim. In both cases, <em>it<\/em>\u2014the moral claim\u2014becomes synonymous with and then subsumes <em>she<\/em>\u2014the moral subject. Either it\/she is complicit in abusive dynamics\u00a0or it\/she is helpless and therefore not culpable. If moral wars are fought on the scaffold, Janay\u2019s is \u00a0the body displayed prominently in the public square.<\/p>\n<p>But then there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WhyIStayed?src=hash\">#whyistayed and #whyileft<\/a>. These offshoots of the Rice discourse do something qualitatively different than the debates categorized under the encompassing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/JanayRice?src=hash\">#Janayrice<\/a> hashtag. Refusing to wage war on and through the object of Janay, women on #whyistayed and #whyileft project their own voices; share their own stories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/whyistayed.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-19147 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/whyistayed-400x303.png\" alt=\"whyistayed\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/whyistayed-400x303.png 400w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/whyistayed-250x189.png 250w, https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/cyborgology\/files\/2014\/09\/whyistayed.png 409w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The women tweeting on #whyistayed and #whyileft shift the site of battle onto themselves, as active subjects.
